Corporate Responsibility

Do we look green to you? We invite you to learn more about what Novell is doing to reduce its carbon footprint at BrainShare 2010.

Toward an Eco-friendly BrainShare

At Novell, we are committed to reducing our negative impact on the environment, so this year, we are giving BrainShare an eco-friendly makeover. Please note: we will no longer provide hard copy handouts, slides or abstracts of conference session presentations. Our earth-friendly alternative is that we'll be giving each participant access to the presentations via a post-conference microsite. Also, in 2010 we will not provide access to the Xerox Copy Center at BrainShare as we have in past years. We believe this will greatly help us reduce our carbon footprint.

In cooperation with the Salt Palace, we are insisting that all partner vendors attending BrainShare comply with rigorous environmental standards so we can minimize our negative impact on the environment.

For BrainShare 2010, we will be more aggressive about recycling, and using recycled content and biodegradable materials. In the BrainShare store, you can purchase merchandise made from recycled materials. In addition, BrainShare is using recycled paper wherever possible. For instance, all bathroom paper products at BrainShare 2010 are made from recycled materials, with toilet tissue and seat covers containing 20 percent post-consumer recycled content (PCC). And this year, printed materials will feature soy-based ink.

Additional eco-friendly measures we are implementing include using biodegradable materials in everything from the carpet and merchandise to the utensils and napkins. All utensils and concession ware at BrainShare 2010 are corn-based and biodegradable, including carry-out packaging, cups, plates, utensils and napkins.

Another new requirement this year at BrainShare is that we will only use non-hazardous cleaning materials. The event staff is using all commercial 3M Green Seal products for cleaning glass, floors, bathrooms and other general areas. The carpet cleaning products at BrainShare 2010 are neutral pH and biodegradable, and all restrooms now contain Green Seal Certified foam hand soap.

Additionally, BrainShare 2010 will feature:

  • Single source recycling. All trash from BrainShare 2010 will be sorted at an external location, and all reusable material will be recycled
  • Solar panels that offset the lighting in the underground parking structure
  • Waterless urinals in the restrooms. Each waterless urinal saves 40,000 gallons of water per year
  • Installation of variable frequency drives that promote the efficient operation of the HVAC system
  • The use of a centralized control system for all the HVAC systems
  • Motion sensors for the lighting systems
  • Improved air quality. We will meet these standards by increasing the air exchange rates in the facility
  • Portable CO2 monitoring systems that are employed on an as-needed basis
  • Water conserving bathroom fixtures including hands-free faucets, low-flow toilets and waterless urinals
  • Utilization of drip irrigation systems in landscape features
  • Bike racks available in the parking structure to promote the use of human-powered mobility
  • Preferred parking positions for all carpooling attendees
  • Restroom paper products with at least 20 percent PCC
