Business Service Management
Building a Configuration Management Database from the Ground Up |
Come see an overview of a configuration management database (CMDB), how data is federated and how it is used in an organization. The session will provide a live demonstration and discussion of the Novell CMDB solution. It will also show you how to determine the best data sources and the best level of detail to bring into the CMDB. In addition, the session will cover the automations that the Novell solution brings in to correlate and reconcile data sources to build the CMDB and later to keep the CMDB synchronized and accurate with the data sources of record. Various visualization techniques will also be covered based upon the role of the user. |
Business Service Management on the Fly—In under 60 Minutes! |
Gain a view of the infrastructure logically and physically in this real-time demonstration - in under 60 minutes. The session will cover everything from the integration of infrastructure components that generate models of the logical and physical entities and relationships, to health and availability data, to the application of rules deriving state more granularly than red/green up/down, to rules triggering action proactively before a service impacting event, and will finish with dynamic visualization leveraging the latest SVG and Web 2.0 technologies. With these technologies, you can see large amounts of data in concise, actionable views without complexity. This session will prove that "a picture is worth a thousand words" by leveraging powerful techniques that simplify complex data. |
Rules, Rules, Rules: Proactively Automate Management of the Service Infrastructure |
This session is an introduction to building rules into service models. Rules enable you to manage the definitions of severity and priority and automated actions, such as notifications. These rules also enable you to proactively monitor and manage the service infrastructure in real time. The solution provides more than after-the-fact reporting on technology performance and availability; it provides a view into the current trajectory of service performance and into potential service breaches before they occur. This allows IT to apply the proper resources to the highest priority services as required. The Novell solution also factors in multi-faceted rules and visualization. This allows you to prioritize performance against availability. An example of this would be raising awareness before an event that will affect performance while that service is still available. The Novell solution is a true "service" monitoring and management solution because of its ability to calendar business hours, and because use and demand are also factored in when calculating service awareness and breaches versus pure up/down availability. Finally, the session will discuss and demonstrate how these rules are configured; it will discuss best practices for configuring/defining, and the real-time multi-dimensional visualization of the service via the appropriate dashboards. |
Making IT Work As One: Business Service Management from the Desktop to the Data Center |
This session covers desktop to data center monitoring, management and how the Business Service Management solution brings together data from many Novell sources and provides a single view. Integrations that will be demonstrated and discussed include, but are not limited to, PlateSpin Recon, Novell ZENworks suite, Novell ZENworks Linux Management, Novell ZENworks Configuration Management, Novell Sentinel and PlateSpin Orchestrate. This discussion will focus on the methods, mechanics and best practices of federating multiple data sources based on the intended use and audience. It will cover the technical aspects of the integration capabilities of the Business Service Management solution. It will also show how the Business Service Management solution provides a real-time view of data from its source, versus a solution that extracts, translates and loads data into a common repository that must be maintained. The Novell solution accesses the data in real time from the trusted management source and provides the most accurate, up-to-date view of federated data—turning it into actionable information. |
Next Generation Business Service Management: Strategy and Roadmap |
This session covers the strategic direction of the Business Service Management solution from Novell within the data center, as well as the strategy moving forward. |
Virtualization and Workload Management
Beyond Disaster Recovery: Restoring Production Workloads with PlateSpin Forge |
This session explores the two phases of restoring workloads and IT services from an outage or a full-blown disaster. Phase one is the disaster recovery itself, or automatic failover to run protected workloads in a recovery environment after a disruption. Phase two is often overlooked; it returns the protected workloads to the rebuilt or replaced production environment. During this session, you will learn how to configure PlateSpin Forge to handle both of these critical phases. |
Accelerating Server Hardware Upgrades with PlateSpin Migrate P2P |
How long does it take to upgrade to a new server? Re-installing and configuring applications and patches is tedious, error-prone, time-consuming-and let's face it-boring. During this session, you will learn how physical-to-physical (P2P) conversions with PlateSpin Migrate can dramatically accelerate and automate this process, shorten the downtime window, and can even be scheduled to run unattended. |
Adaptive Computing Using PlateSpin Orchestrate |
Adaptive computing goes beyond just intelligently utilizing available resources; it encompasses quality of service (QoS) targets, fault tolerance (high availability), monitoring, and iterative analysis of the resulting dataset to determine what corrective measures (adaptations) should occur at any given moment. As virtualization becomes widespread in the data center, the need for automating the placement and configuration of workloads (virtual machines) using an adaptive computing model becomes vitally important. This session demonstrates how to use events, introduced in PlateSpin Orchestrate 2.0.2, to create rules that trigger workload provisioning, migration, and other virtual machine lifecycle operations. It will also offer a preview of new functionality included in the upcoming 2.1 release of the product. |
Consolidation Planning: Getting the Most from Your Virtualization Initiative |
During this session, you'll get an in-depth look at the principles and best practices of planning a server consolidation project. You will learn how to ensure projects meet goals such as minimizing new hardware purchases or rack space, how and when to use different strategies such as scale up versus scale out, and how to prove those goals were met after the project is finished. |
Virtualizing Mission-critical Workloads: The PlateSpin Story |
Explore the key roadblocks to virtualizing mission-critical workloads including SAP and Oracle. Discuss the potential benefits, in terms of performance and service-level delivery, in migrating these workloads to an internal cloud. Learn how PlateSpin solutions pave the way to migrating mission-critical workloads with little or no downtime, integrate non-disruptive testing in the virtual environment, and provide real-time workload protection and recovery. |
