Novell had a huge presence at GUADEC 2006. At almost any time of the day, a Novell developer was presenting a session on a killer project that they are working on. I knew that Novell was doing a lot in desktop Linux, but I came away from GUADEC realizing that almost every major advancement in desktop Linux lately has been spearheaded by Novell. It was a real eye opener.
For example, Joe Shaw’s session on Beagle was well presented and informative. Desktop Search is seriously cool stuff when it comes to making people more productive.
The uncanny part about these brilliant developers is that they’re all so young. The leaders of the pack are the crew that Miguel de Icaza and Nat Friedman assembled at Ximian. When I commented as much to the team’s fearless leader JP Rosevear, he quipped something back about how that was pretty much how it was at Ximian. They’re an inspiring bunch.
Unfortunately, my easily distractable American brain could not help but think that we were living in a game of Clue. (Click the pic to embiggen.)
