Problem

Does anyone know of way to set a notification in your own mailbox for a new item received in a shared folder? The shared folder does give the new mail icon when there is new mail, but I'd like a notification to pop up."

Solution

1. Create a rule in the account of the person/resource sharing the folder that sends an email message to everyone who the folder is shared with (or at least whoever wants the screen pop) when the item is filed.

2. If you want, create a second rule to automatically delete the sent item.

3. On the receiving end, set up a rule to have those messages automatically marked read, filed and then deleted a day later or so later.

This way you'll get the screen pop but not have to deal with the messages in your mailbox. Of course, you'll need to weigh the costs/benefits of more network traffic and mail storage vs. the convenience of the notification and having it all automated.
