"We recently migrated from Exchange to GroupWise to harmonise on a common messaging and collaboration system," said Simon Turner, ICT Manager for the Vale of White Horse District Council and South Oxfordshire District Council. "Riva Identity Integration from Omni has enabled our Active Directory administrators to manage their new GroupWise accounts from Active Directory instead of having to learn how to use Novell's native tools."

Riva Identity Integration for Active Directory and GroupWise
The Vale of White Horse District Council and South Oxfordshire District Council serve approximately 245,000 residents in the UK. Each District Council shares a common goal to deliver high quality services for its residents and to search for new ways to get the best value for Council taxpayers.
Recently, the District Councils decided to implement Novell GroupWise as their common messaging and collaboration platform. GroupWise was determined to be a robust, secure and lower-cost alternative to Microsoft Exchange. Riva Identity Integration from Omni allowed Vale of White Horse District Council to manage their new GroupWise accounts from Microsoft Active Directory without needing to invest in training on the native Novell administration tools, ConsoleOne and iManager.
Prior to harmonising on a single messaging and collaboration platform, Vale of White Horse District Council and South Oxfordshire District Council used two separate email systems – Microsoft Exchanage and Novell GroupWise. The Councils conducted an independent study to determine which system would best satisfy their needs and deliver the best return on investment. GroupWise was recommended as a robust and secure messaging platform that could be implemented at a significantly lower cost than Exchange. Therefore, Vale of White Horse District Council, which had been running Exchange, migrated its 300 users to GroupWise.
The next challenge that needed to be considered was how Vale of White Horse District Council would manage their new GroupWise accounts. The information technology team was experienced using Microsoft Active Directory to manage their former system and preferred to continue using Active Directory to save on training costs to learn how to use Novell's native administration tools.
What they needed was a low-cost and easy-to-implement solution that would synchronise identity management changes made in Active Directory to GroupWise.
NDS8, a longstanding Novell and Omni partner in the UK, recommended Riva Identity Integration for Active Directory and GroupWise to solve this challenge.
Riva Identity Integration allows organisations to:
- manage GroupWise accounts from Active Directory
- run Microsoft Active Directory for authentication, file and print services and GroupWise for collaboration
- migrate from Novell NetWare to Windows Server 2008 / 2003 and retain GroupWise for messaging
Riva Identity Integration enabled Vale of White Horse District Council administrators to continue using Active Directory to manage their new GroupWise accounts. This saved time and training costs that would have been required to learn how to use ConsoleOne and iManager, Novell's native administration tools for GroupWise and eDirectory.
Managing GroupWise from Active Directory is now transparent and seamless. Riva monitors Active Directory containers for new users and for changes made to user accounts (e.g., updated passwords, changes to mail group memberships, and changes to directory attributes). Riva then automatically synchronises these changes and creates new GroupWise accounts, updates passwords and other attributes as necessary. GroupWise users authenticate with their Active Directory password. Compared to other identity management solutions, Riva is much quicker to implement and is far more cost effective.
"We have been using Riva Identity Integration for over six months now," said Simon Turner, ICT Manager for the Vale of White Horse District Council and South Oxfordshire District Council, "and the management of our GroupWise system with Active Directory has been seamless. Our Active Directory administrators have not required any training on Novell's native administration tools."
"Riva has helped our Councils harmonise on a common messaging platform yet still retain Vale of White Horse District Council's experience and expertise using Active Directory to manage user accounts. Riva was able to satisfy our identity management needs at a significantly lower cost than alternative IDM solutions from Microsoft or Novell. We are very pleased."
