OpenOffice.org Novell Edition

For quit some time OpenOffice.org is the standard office suite used at Novell, when I started to use OpenOffice a few years ago I had some problems opening some Microsoft Office documents but with current release the support for these documents has been a lot better. The fact that support for Microsoft Office documents has been optimised isn't such a surprise, Novell has done a lot of work to get this improved.

As you might know, Novell has their own edition of OpenOffice.org included in SLED 10, this allows us to add new developments that Novell has been working on without having to wait before these changes get added to the OpenOffice.org release.

What many people do not know is that this Novell Edition is also available for the Windows Platform. The Windows version of the OpenOffice.org Novell Edition ships with the Novell Open Workgroup Suite, if you want to start using the Novell edition of OpenOffice.org just get it from our download page.

If you have a look at the download page for the Novell Edition there is a list of things that are included in this release, I think the most important being better support for opening MS-Office documents (mainly due to the fonts Novell licensed from Agfa and the macro features that where added).
But, as mentioned, just have a look at the download page for a full overview.

Does or will it support docx

Does or will it support docx format ( from MSO2007 that is still in beta ) ? What about licensing, when you say there is a Windows version available I still would have to have a Novell Workgroup or SLED license to use one, right ? or not even SLED as this is a Windows version ? With just OpenOffice I do not have to I believe.

I'm not sure if or when

I'm not sure if or when OpenOffice will be supporting the new MS Office formats, maybe someone else can answer that.
You don't need SLED to use the Windows version of OO Novell Edition. Open Office is licensed through the GNU Manifesto explains the details. In legal terms, GNU software is protected by the GNU General Public License, or GPL, and by the GNU Lesser General Public License, or LGPL. The Linux kernel, which is subject to the GPL, benefits from this project (especially from the tools), but should not be seen as the same thing.">GNU Lesser General Public License and as such it's free to be used.
