"My organization doesn't collaborate"
An interesting statement I've heard in support of building out a collaborative solution. Though highly inaccurate, it's a statement I've heard and read all too often. Frankly, if your employees are using email, they're collaborating. It's important to remember that email, at least from an enterprise perspective isn't going anywhere. Rather, it's entrenched as a core component of any collaboration solution that's targeted at the enterprise be it Exchange or Teaming.
With that said, in enterprises where email is the end-all be-all collaborative solution, 'walled-gardens' of information have been erected. This doesn't mean people have a death-grip on their IP. It simply means they don't have the tools to publish or make available their thoughts, ideas, and data to a wider audience. That wider audience encompasses peers who live within and outside of the firewall. In the latest release of GroupWise some of these challenges are mitigated however email, for all intensive purposes enables the individual, while Teaming enables the department or organization.
Touching back, the statement that opened this conversation can often be interpreted to mean any one or more of the following
- We have a problem enabling groups of employees to share information
- The organization suffers from not being able to identify experts
- The knowledge captured in email is not search-able across the entire organization
The point is, it's unrealistic that any organization has a problem with employees sharing information. Quite frankly they share information all the time. Case in-point there's an entire industry around email compliance. The real issue is granting access to these walled-gardens for the purposes of solving determined and yet to be determined business challenges.
