Where we make sense of the jargon and technical terms used in this community.

object bank search for term

The central layer of the Novell Storage Services (NSS) Media Access Layer (MAL). The object bank is responsible for registration of storage managers and storage data objects. Storage free space is recognized by NSS and deposited into the object bank for NSS use.

object class search for term

The structure that the network administrator chooses and provides with data in order to create a Novell Directory Services (NDS) object. The types of object classes are the same as the names of the objects themselves. For example, User, Organization, Server, etc.

object engine search for term

Short for "object engine layer."

object engine layer search for term

In Novell Storage Services (NSS), a layer in the software architecture that stores and manages NSS objects such as files and NSS volumes.

object property search for term

A property that identifies categories of information associated with an object.

Object Request Broker search for term

A component in the CORBA programming model that acts as the middleware between clients and servers. In the CORBA object-based computing model, a client can request a service without knowing anything about which servers are attached to the network. The various ORBs receive the requests, forward them to the appropriate servers, and then hand the results back to the client. Novell has its own ORB.

object right search for term

Any of the rights needed to access an object. The object that possesses the rights is called the trustee. With the exception of the Supervisor object right, object rights do not affect properties or property rights. However, the Supervisor object right grants access to all property values.

Short for "Object Trustees property."

A secret token, such as a password or fingerprint, that authenticates (uniquely identifies) a user to the system.

OCL search for term

Open Content LicenseA license designed for distribution of open content material. This license is not compatible with the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License The license was designed for manuals, textbooks, and other reference and instructional materials. However, it can be used for any text-based work, regardless of subject matter. It stipulates that any copy of the material, even if modified, carry the same license. Those copies may be sold but, if produced in quantity, have to be made available in a format which facilitates further editing.">GFDL because it does not allow the OCL licensed material, or derivation of such material to be sold; and restricts further versions to be licensed as OCL as well.

octet search for term

A sequence of 8 binary digits regarded as a unit.

OCX search for term

A short name for OLE custom controls. Such control modules end with the .ocx extension.

odd parity search for term

Error detection method requiring an odd number of ones in each byte.

An interface that allows the coexistence of two network driver interfaces: the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) and the Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) specification.

OEM search for term

Original Equipment ManufacturerA company that manufactures computer equipment which it then sells to other computer makers and vendors who, in turn, sell it to end users.

offline UPS search for term

offline uninterruptible power sourceA backup power unit that supplies uninterrupted power if a commercial power outage occurs. Offline UPS monitors the power line. When power drops, the UPS is activated. The drawback to this method is the slight lag before the offline UPS becomes active. However, most offline UPS systems are fast enough to offset this lag.

offspring count search for term

The number of subdirectories and files in a directory.

On the Road search for term

A location option while installing the NetWare Connect Service Client in the workstation. It defines a profile for situations when you are not connected to the network. (Context: "Includes dial up access to the network to allow you to be more productive at home and on the road, saving you time".)

on-demand call search for term

A type of call that is activated by the presence of data traffic directed to or through the remote peer system.

on-demand connection search for term

A method of connecting to a remote system that enables occasional instead of permanent access, thereby saving connection expense and maximizing the use of network resources. This type of connection uses static routing information to advertise the presence of exterior networks, although no route currently exists.

on-demand SVC search for term

on-demand switched virtual circuitA virtual circuit that is closed after data has been transmitted over the established switched virtual circuit (SVC). The circuit remains closed until more data is queued for sending, at which point connection is reestablished.

online help search for term

1. An electronic documentation file formatted according to the requirements of the destination operating system. Help files generally contain short instructions about how to perform certain features. They generally have fewer graphics than printed or electronic books of the same material. Help files reformat as needed to the screen window dimensions, and make heavy use of hypertext linking, pop-up boxes, and so forth. Help files are context-sensitive, which means that you can jump to a specific topic within the help file directly from the applications dialog and menu interface, etc.

open file structure search for term

When a file is opened or created, an internal data structure called an Open File Structure is allocated that represents that state of that open file. The user gets back a key to the open file structure that must be used for all subsequent accesses to the file (reads, writes, wild-reads, and getting and modifying file metadata).

open publication license search for term

A license used for creating free and open publications; created by the Open Content Project. The license is generally focused at academics; however, some artists have found it suitable to their tastes.

Open Secure Shell search for term

A set of computer programs providing encrypted communication sessions over a computer network. It was created as an open alternative to Secure Shell (SSH).

Open Shortest Path First search for term

A hierarchical Interior Gateway Protocol routing algorithm that relies on OSPF routers having constructed a complete topology of the network from link states. For each destination, the router examines its link state database and selects the shortest path as the route to that destination. OSPF then allows the routers to derive such information as least-cost routing, equal-cost routing, and load balancing.

open source software search for term

A program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge, ie, open. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community.

OSI modelA seven-layer model for data communication which is the standard network architecture developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The layers are as follows: physical, data-link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application.

OpenLDAP search for term

A free, open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). It is released under its own OpenLDAP license. It has been included with several common Linux distributions.

OpenSSH search for term

Open Secure Shell A set of computer programs providing encrypted communication sessions over a computer network. It was created as an open alternative to Secure Shell (SSH).

The master control program that runs the computer. It is the first program loaded when the computer is turned on, and its main part, called the kernel, resides in memory at all times. The operating system performs basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. The operating system acts as an interface between the user and the computer, enabling the user to operate software applications and access all resources available on the computer, including the CPU, media drives, memory, printers, and storage devices.

The portion of server memory used by the NetWare operating system. Also known as kernel memory space.

OSP domainAn area in memory reserved to run untested third-party NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs).

operator hold search for term

A hold placed on a print job by a Queue Operator.

optical disc search for term

A form of removable media used to store data. An optical disc can be one-sided or two-sided. Some optical discs are read-only; others can be read from and written to.

optical disc library search for term

A high-capacity storage device, sometimes called a jukebox, that uses an autochanger mechanism to mount and dismount optical discs as needed.

Organization object search for term

A mandatory container object in the Novell Directory Services (NDS) tree that represents an organization such as a corporation, university, or operating division. It contains the objects that represent the network users and resources in the actual organization. It must reside either immediately under the root of the tree or under a Country object.

Organizational CA search for term

Organizational Certificate AuthorityA certificate authority (CA) that a network administrator creates using ConsoleOne. The Organizational CA is specific to the organization and uses a private key for signing operations.

Organizational Role search for term

Short for "Organizational Role object."

Organizational Role object search for term

A leaf object in the Novell Directory Services (NDS) tree that represents a position or role, such as Team Leader or Accounting Resources Manager, that can be filled by any designated user. Using it simplifies rights management, because an administrator grants rights to the Organizational Role object. The designated user who fills that role then has those rights.

Short for "Organizational Unit object."

To create multiple logical volumes where the combined space exceeds the allotted amount of space in the storage pool.

overlay image search for term

In ZENworks Desktop Management, an archived collection of files that will be applied to an existing Windows installation on a target computer. The existing partitions and files on the target computer are left intact, except for any files that the overlay image might update. Also called add-on image.
