Glossary

Where we make sense of the jargon and technical terms used in this community.

value-added process search for term

An application that runs on top of the network operating system. VAPs tie in with the network operating system so that print servers, archive servers, and database servers can provide services without interfering with the network's normal operation. VAPs run on top of the operating system in much the same way a word processing or spreadsheet application runs on top of DOS. NLM programs provide this type of enhancement for NetWare.

valueOf! construct search for term

A code for assigning a value from the whiteboard to a property in a condition or action. In the Rule Editor, if a condition or action property has a caret (^) as part of its name, you can use the special code valueOf.whiteboardkey, where whiteboardkey is the name of the key whose value you want. When your application fires the rule, it substitutes the key's value for the special code. Several Rule Editor constants, such as userID and today, can be used like whiteboard keys in valueOf! expressions.

VAP search for term

value-added processAn application that runs on top of the network operating system. VAPs tie in with the network operating system so that print servers, archive servers, and database servers can provide services without interfering with the network's normal operation. VAPs run on top of the operating system in much the same way a word processing or spreadsheet application runs on top of DOS. NLM programs provide this type of enhancement for NetWare.

vCard search for term

A file format for the exchange of contact information. When you get an address card attached to an e-mail, it's probably in vCard format. Contrast with search folder.

VDT search for term

1. Video Display Terminal: computer monitor; an input/output device with a display screen and an input keyboard.2. Video Dial Tone: A type of network that carries TV over telephone lines.3. Volume Definition Table: A table that keeps track of volume segment information such as volume name, volume size, and where volume segments are located on various network hard disks. Each NetWare volume contains a volume definition table in its NetWare partition.

VESA search for term

Video Electronic Standards AssociationA consortium of manufacturers formed to establish and maintain industry-wide standards for video cards and monitors. VESA was instrumental in the introduction of the Super VGA and Extended VGA video graphics standards with a refresh rate of 70 Hz, minimizing flicker and helping to reduce user eyestrain and fatigue.

VFAT search for term

virtual file allocation tableA scheme to access filesystems using a 32-bit protected mode filesystem driver outside the DOS kernel. VFAT uses direct BIOS or hardware access to disk and integrated caching to make access faster.

video card search for term

A circuit board that enables a computer to display information on its screen. The resolution, number of colors, and refresh rate of a monitor is determined by the kind of video card used, plus the limitations of the monitor itself. Also called graphics adapter, display adapter, video adapter.

Video Dial Tone search for term

A type of network that carries TV over telephone lines.

Video Display Terminal search for term

Computer monitor; an input/output device with a display screen and an input keyboard.

Video Electronics Standard Association search for term

A consortium of manufacturers formed to establish and maintain industry-wide standards for video cards and monitors. VESA was instrumental in the introduction of the Super VGA and Extended VGA video graphics standards with a refresh rate of 70 Hz, minimizing flicker and helping to reduce user eyestrain and fatigue.

View Builder search for term

In ZENworks Server Management, a mechanism through which you can create a view to display information from the agents that have instrumented SNMP MIBs and traps sent by the agent to the management site server.

view-specific toolbar buttons search for term

In NetWare Administrator, the set of toolbar buttons that are unique to the active tool. They are inserted in the position marked by [Active View Buttons] on the Toolbar - Main Features tab.

Viewing window search for term

In ZENworks Server Management, a representation of the managed server or workstation desktop. It is displayed on the management console when the remote operator initiates a Remote Management session.

virtual circuit search for term

A type of circuit that provides a connection-oriented service similar to that of circuit switching, but with the following exceptions:

  • It is limited to a connection between two end points.
  • It has the advantage of economical statistical multiplexing for establishing a logical path through the network.

This logical path can be provided either on a permanent basis by a permanent virtual circuit (PVC), which is equivalent to a leased circuit, or on a request basis by an switched virtual circuit (SVC). Once the logical path is established, the packets are transferred between connected ends, as desired.

virtual circuit number search for term

A method that determines which packets belong to a virtual circuit. Each packet can contain a 4-bit logical group number and an 8-bit logical channel number.

virtual console search for term

Provides multiple "screens" on which a user can log in and run programs. One screen is displayed on the computer's monitor at any given time; a key sequence is used to switch between virtual consoles.

virtual discussion group search for term

An Internet discussion group that presents the results of a search across multiple discussion groups in order to enable easy access to a specific topic.

virtual file allocation table search for term

A scheme to access filesystems using a 32-bit protected mode filesystem driver outside the DOS kernel. VFAT uses direct BIOS or hardware access to disk and integrated caching to make access faster.

virtual host search for term

In the Novell Web Server environment, a logical entity within a virtual server that acts as a Web Server, with its own DNS hostname or IP address. A virtual host has its own document and log files, but it uses the virtual servers configuration files.

virtual link search for term

The software that extends a network backbone area by linking two partitioned areas.

Virtual Loadable Module search for term

An executable program for a DOS workstation used to enable various kinds of communications with a server, or to enable applications on a server running NetWare 4 or an earlier version. For example, the NetWare DOS Requester is a suite of VLM programs, as is Desktop SNMP.

virtual memory search for term

A memory management scheme that permits execution of programs larger than the size of physical memory. Using virtual memory, least-used data is moved out of memory to disk, thus freeing memory for other uses. When the data is needed again, it is returned to memory where it is swapped for other data that is then moved to disk.

virtual private network search for term

A data network that uses the public telecommunications infrastructure, but maintains privacy through the use of a tunneling protocol and security procedures. A VPN gives a company the same capabilities as a system of owned or leased lines to which that company has exclusive access. However, costs are much lower because the VPN uses the shared public infrastructure rather than exclusive line access.

virtual search server search for term

A collection of one or more indexes and related configuration files characterized by a unique name (for example, search.digitalairlines.com). A virtual search server is the NetWare Web Search method of creating and hosting a search service intended for a specific audience and purpose.

virtual search server administrator search for term

The person who has administrative control over one or more virtual search servers.

virtual server search for term

In ZENworks Desktop Management and ZENworks Server Management, a logical server, rather than a physical node, to which cluster-enabled shared volumes are tied.

Virtual Telecommunications Access Method search for term

An IBM-licensed program composed of loadable modules that control telecommunications by identifying communications resources to the host operating system (System/370).

virus search for term

A program that inserts itself into other files or programs. When executed, it spreads to more programs and other computers. A virus can cause substantial damage by clogging networks or disk drives, deleting files, or opening security holes.

VLAN search for term

Virtual LANA local area network with a definition that maps workstations on some basis other than geographic location. For example, by department, type of user, or primary application.

VLM search for term

Virtual Loadable ModuleAn executable program for a DOS workstation used to enable various kinds of communications with a server, or to enable applications on a server running NetWare 4 or an earlier version. For example, the NetWare DOS Requester is a suite of VLM programs, as is Desktop SNMP.

vol$log.err search for term

The NetWare volume error log.

volatile setting search for term

In ZENworks Desktop Management, part of the Windows Group Policy. The volatile setting indicates that the original local Group policy settings will be restored when the user logs out (user settings are restored) or when the system shuts down (workstation settings are restored).

volume construction search for term

In Novell Storage Services (NSS), an option in the Administration menu that allows NSS partitions and storage groups, when they are created, to be subdivided into NSS volumes.

Volume Definition Table search for term

A table that keeps track of volume segment information such as name, size, and location on various network hard disks. Each NetWare volume contains a Volume Definition table in its NetWare partition.

volume icon search for term

On the desktop, an icon that looks like a filing cabinet. In the Browser, an icon that resembles a hard disk. Each icon represents a volume on the server.
