copyleftsearch for term: A play on the term "copyright," copyleft is the essential concept at the heart of the Free Software Foundation's General Public License. According to the FSF, "Copyleft says that anyone who redistributes the software, with or without changes, must pass along the freedom to further copy and change it." This is sharp contradistinction to the permissions granted by BSD style licenses, which allow you to do anything you want with a piece of code, as long as you maintain the copyright notices.A copyleft is a notice giving the public legal permission to redistribute a program or other work of art. Copylefts are used by left-wing programmers to promote freedom and cooperation. The particular form of copyleft used by the GNU Manifesto explains the details. In legal terms, GNU software is protected by the GNU General Public License, or GPL, and by the GNU Lesser General Public License, or LGPL. The Linux kernel, which is subject to the GPL, benefits from this project (especially from the tools), but should not be seen as the same thing.">GNU project is called the GNU General Public License.
