MTC is located in Oakland, Calif. Alameda County. Alameda County includes a large unincorporated area, with mountains and beaches falling under its jurisdiction. MTC’s offices are located right off the Lake Merritt Bart station and are within a 15-minute BART ride from downtown San Francisco.

MTC was created by the Legislature in 1971, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission is the transportation planning, coordinating, and financing agency for the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area. MTC distributes over $1 billion per year in local, state, and federal funds to transportation projects and services. MTC operates the 511 traveler information service, the Clipper transit smart card program as well as other regional customer service programs. MTC is a part of a co-op overseeing a three story building which MTC inhabits two floors with a staff of almost 200 personnel. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Senior Manager – Information Technology, the Novell Systems Administrator will provide computer hardware, software, LAN equipment, peripheral and user support in a networked environment; serve as a systems administrator and technical expert for Novell system (including OES2 on Netware and SUSE Linux, GroupWise email system with spam filtering), server hardware and LAN hardware and configurations. Individual will be a member of a four (4) person team, where customer service is a key aspect.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The applicant must possess the ability to deliver highly complex technical information in terms and concepts that both technical and non-technical personnel can understand, effectively write and present technical concepts and diagram technical configurations. The ability to effectively participate in teams is essential. The applicant must demonstrate project management skills, as it relates to the planning and delivery of infrastructure and application related projects. The applicant must be skilled at using his/her analytical skills and experience to create timely solutions to technical issues. The applicant must possess effective time-management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, balance multiple tasks, work cooperatively within a team environment, and the ability to carry out assignments with minimum supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in an appropriate discipline, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, or Information Systems Management will be given preference. However, an appropriate and confirmed combination of education/training and experience that has provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.

Training and/or experience that provides industry computer science and/or information technology certifications especially in the areas of Novell, Linex, Netware, Groupwise is desired. The appropriate combination of training and experience will be based upon confirmation of information provided.

Experience: a minimum of five (5) years of increasingly complex and diverse information technology experience in afield related to this position, especially in the areas of Novell OES2 on SUSE Linux 10 /Netware, GroupWise 8x, and server hardware.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Must possess demonstrated and thorough knowledge of the following:
1. Systems and network administration for Novell OES2 on SUSE Linux 10 / Netware, SAN storage, and VMware ESX based virtual servers. Expert knowledge of building and supporting current Novell-based IT Infrastructure, including print services, file servers, E-mail servers and associated networking services, such as DHCP, DNS etc.

2. Enterprise E-mail systems (GroupWise 8.x) and its necessary components, i.e. Sendmail gateway servers, virus and spam filtering appliances, services and technologies.

3. Experience in providing Helpdesk support to end users and knowledge of Helpdesk process, systems and documentation.
