Font Sizes and Printing Plain Text

Problem

When my users receive a plain text email and try to print it, the font is small (maybe 6 or 8 points). Where can we change this? Changing in Tools > Options > Environment > Views changes the view font, but not the print font.

Solution

After testing, here's what I found:

When printing from the Viewer, GroupWise uses the font and size settings from the viewer.

When printing from the message (either by right-clicking and selecting Print, or using Open > Print) it uses the font STYLE that is specified in the viewer, but the font SIZE that is specified for the read view under Tools > Options > Environment.

However, when you're printing a message that you composed and sent to yourself or another user in your GroupWise system, it uses the font style and size from YOUR compose view under Tools, Options, Environment, no matter what the recipient's font settings are. So, apparently, plain text messages somehow have embedded font information as long as they stay within the GroupWise system.

It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.

font sizes and printing plain text

Standard font is definitely too small.
You can change it only for the single user, because it´s in the registry.
The settings are all configured in HKCU\Software\Novell\GroupWise\Client\Setup.
For creating text messages:
: DoNotCreateHTMLMessages DWORD Value: 1
: PlainTextComposeFontName: Value: name of installed font (i.e. Arial)
: PlainTextComposeFontSize DWORD Value: 0x0000000d

You can force these settings down via ZENworks or a login script.

Font handling is broken

Submitted by paul_woodward on 10 April 2008 - 5:13am.

The defaults are way too small, especially given the very high DPI of modern screens. I know software developers like small fonts cos they can get more stuff on screen, but try running 8pt text by some 40-50 year olds with less than 20/20 vision.

Getting users to print from the viewer is the only way they can influence the size of the printed output. In my experience it ignores the font face, but the size chosen does influence (not dictate) the size of the resulting output. Broken - if it won't honour the settings properly, why are they there?

The major factor in how it prints is the font face/size chosen by the oroginal author of the message.

So I can't decide how an email I've received will look when I print it. Oh, apart from the joke "bigger" and "biggest" options (so 8pt goes to 16pt or 24pt!) Try telling your ceo that he can print in whatever size he likes as long as its 8pt or 16pt!

On screen it's not much better. I can decide how message contents will look on screen if I jump through a few hoops. But I can't change the font used in the views and folder list part of the screen at all. Broken.

In the Linux client there is a font face/size option for printing. Brilliant. Why not Windows client? Our "solution" is to force run registry setting at login, similar to those detailed above. If everyone composes in Verdana 10 then everything prints in Verdana 10 too.

Why are font choices not held in the database on a per user basis? Why don't messages print in the same typeface and size as they are displayed on screen? Why can't I set domain/po font defaults in the Client Options in ConsoleOne?
