Making the Most Out of Web Panels

Web panels are a great new feature of GroupWise 8. You can now have websites immediately accessible just as you would any other important data such as e-mail, contacts, calendar, etc. The problem is that when you view a website in a panel you typically can't see much of the website at any one time without removing other panels. Sure, you can double-click the web panel so that it takes up your entire GW client screen but this isn't an optimal solution. Doing this means you no longer see your other GroupWise data so at that point it's just as easy to fire up your web browser.

The solution to this? Mobile websites.

Many websites are now "optimized" for mobile browsers, such as Blazer (PalmOS), Internet Explorer Mobile (Windows Mobile), Safari (iPhone), etc. Well it just so happens that it's easy to make a web panel in GroupWise approximate the size of a smartphone's screen, so mobile websites are perfect for GroupWise web panels. This allows you to view the information in its entirety while still keeping all of your other GroupWise information on the screen at the same time. Take a look at these screen shots which display my main mailbox in one panel, a folder for the NGWList in another panel, a summary calendar in yet another, the QuickViewer, and a web panel. Here are the sample websites from the screenshots.

Google Search: http://www.google.com/m?source=mobileproducts

Google Search results: (results from a search using the above URL)

Bloomberg.com: http://www.bloomberg.com/mobile

Chicago Tribune Mobile Edition: http://mobile.chicagotribune.com/

And, most importantly

Cubs.com: http://wap.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=chc

This is just another way GroupWise 8 helps you become more productive.

Remember "Maximize" as well

Remember also that you can double-click the title bar for any panel and maximize it in the GroupWise client. Thus, even those pages that cannot easily show in a panel on their own will be accessible by maximizing the entire panel. Then just double-click the title bar for the panel again and it minimizes.

True but...

...that brings up its own issues. That's why I said,

"Sure, you can double-click the web panel so that it takes up your entire GW client screen but this isn't an optimal solution. Doing this means you no longer see your other GroupWise data so at that point it's just as easy to fire up your web browser"

in my tip. :-)
