Q. Can PlateSpin Forge 510/310 handle generation management and large file servers by compressing backup volume images?
A. No. PlateSpin Forge doesn't compress backup volume images because it backs up images in a VMware ESX disk image format. So you may need to calculate your generation management number and server storage size to adjust your sizing to fit 3.5TB (maximum internal storage size). The easiest way to expand your PlateSpin Forge storage capacity is by connecting to an external iSCSI storage or upgrading PlateSpin Forge with a Fibre Channel card (which can be purchased from Novell) and attaching any Fibre Channel storage.
This problem is alleviated in the upcoming version with our new support of thin provisioned virtual machines, as well as support for data compression.
Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).
