ZCM Support for XenDesktop
Submitted by pcoombs on 17 June 2010 - 8:02pm.
I believe this subject is very important, as many of our Zenworks customers are looking at VDI seriously now, however it seems that there is no further information available from Novell (beyond these two documents) , and we also had a customer log a support incident that was cancelled, it appears that Novell support state that using Zenworks for XenDesktop is not supported. Novell need to act, I'm expecting Novell to have a whitepaper or something detailing the integration options and specific configuration required. Almost every Zenworks customer that I can think of has Citrix XenApp, and Citrix are aggressively pushing XenDesktop into their XenApp customers, it seems likely that they may end up having to leave Novell behind as they move forward.

We are investigating the possibilities with VDI (XENdesktop) and ZCM10.x but have also some problems with intergration. There is no info at all from the Novell site..., we really want to use ZCM but it's not easy to get things done. we have issues using the PXE enviroment, the usage of the adaptive agent in the VDI session etc. some guideance in this would be very welcome! I agree with the statement that it could mean to leave ZCM out of this option at all..... so Novell give this some priority!

re: ZENworks in a Citrix Environment

Thanks Randal. In terms of how ZENworks works in a Virtual Desktop world, this is very much on our radar once ZENworks 11 has shipped in November. We believe that ZCM is very well placed to embrace and enhance VDI solutions such as Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View.
In terms of getting the agent installed, my advice would be to either script the installation of the agent once a clone has been created or alternatively create a custom deployment package with the DNS names/IP addresses of the server removed and a single entry in its place called "unconfigured", case-sensitive without the quotes. When this agent is installed it should install but not attempt to register to the ZONE. You can then script a "zac reg" command as the first step after cloning a desktop to ensure that it is created as a unique managed device in ZENworks based on the unique windows name.
Thanks
Andy
