Recorded Software Demos: the Long and the Short Of It
Novell -- like most other large software vendors -- regularly produces online pre-recorded demos as part of their marketing effort. When you have great technology like we do it's tempting to go into lots of detail in these and show off all the product can do, but then you end up with a long video that goes on for fifteen, twenty minutes or even longer. People don't want to sit through something that long and even if they do, they've stopped paying real attention after the first five minutes or so.
We want to create demos that are engaging, focused on solving real-world problems and above all, short, so we've come up with this new format.
Objective: Pick a use case for a product then articulate the business challenge, the reason for that challenge, the specific capabilities needed and the benefits, followed by a quick demo aimed at a business audience, in under three minutes.
Here are some examples. We'd love to hear what you think of them.

The format is very accessible, and you can replay it if you missed something. I like the idea that a specific benefit is highlighted and demonstrated. Smart people will extrapolate from there, and imagine other applications that will solve problems they face. You just have to inspire them by showing them one very clear example.
Well done! (Especially loved the Application Virtualization demo...)
