Problem
This tip explains on how to run ConsoleOne 1.3.6f on Windows Vista Business Edition, at least until Novell comes with versions of the Novell Client and Console that support Vista.
Here's the typical problem you will encounter:
1. Install Java 6 Runtime. You can find it here: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_manual2.jsp
2. Install the Novell Client, version: 1.0 Build 20070125
Vista Compatibility: The beta version of the Novell client for Windows Vista works with Vista.
Vendor Support: Officially supported. The beta client is available from the Novell Downloads (http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=yIEJzwGwlu0~) site.
3. Install ConsoleOne (C1.exe) like normal. You can find it here: http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=brBWU2uxSiM~
If you start ConsoleOne 1.3.6.f from the icon it creates on the desktop, you will get this error:

(and yes, the Client was installed when I took this snapshot ...)
This error occurs when you try to start ConsoleOne.exe, obviously because of the "New Client."
Solution
To get around this problem,
1. Go to the directory C:\novell\consoleone\1.2\bin
2. Double-click run.bat, or create a new icon on the desktop of the same run.bat and execute it. You can also use ConsoleOneDos.exe, like run.bat.
Vista will change to the basic theme while ConsoleOne runs.
Note: This solution can have some trouble with different ConsoleOne plugins, allthough I have been able to get the GroupWise 7.01 plugins running fine. The only trouble is that I have to go to the Domain eDirectory objects and choose "connect" to make it work. If I choose Tools in the menu to select the Domain, I get errors in the running DOS window.
So, this is only a temporary workaround until there is a solution from Novell, but at least it's usable. This way I don't need an XP machine running VMWare to have ConsoleOne there.
Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).
It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.

Cannot use this technique

Hi,
I have tried this with Vista Enterprise, but when I try to install C1.exe, the installation complains that I have a client with a version less than 4.1 and it won't install C1 at all.
Are there any workarounds?

Same Problem
Submitted by DoTheDEW on 21 May 2008 - 6:39am.
I ran into the same problem with 1.3.6h , reports that the Client is lower than 4.91 installed.
For the proper function of ConsoleOne, Novell Client Version 4.91 or higher version is required.
Exiting ConsoleOne Installation.
If I just copy the folder off a XP Pro box u think that will work ok or cause problems?

I've been using 1.3.6f from the link provided above. It's flaky, but it does the job. I've tried and failed to use any newer version than 1.3.6f.
Hope this helps,
Tariq.

Vista's Aero interface

Vista's Aero interface sometimes creates compatibility problems while installing certain applications. You can switch to basic theme in Windows Vista and it should work fine.

SOLUTION WORKS

YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE CONSOLEONE VERSION FROM THE LINK ABOVE OTHERWISE IT MIGHT NOT WORK. I THOUGHT I HAD A MORE RECENT VERSION WHICH IS CONSOLEONE 1.3.6.h WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE AN OLDER VERSION.
I was getting the same error message from my C1.exe that I needed Client 4.91 or higher. After dowloading the C1.exe from the link above I did not get anymore error messages. I also installed the my old GroupWise plugins from XP and it works like a charm!
Thanks to enevold!

if you want to use the aero
Submitted by c_orlik on 3 February 2009 - 12:40am.
if you want to use the aero theme - you have to change the used java version.
simplest way is to change run.bat with
set JAVA_HOME="c:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.5.0_12\"
and replace every ..\jre with %JRE_HOME%
With Java 6 file open dialogs wont work (swing changed a lot with java 6) but the above java5 works much better then the java1.4 that is packaged with console one.

Console One

To get Console One to work with Vista, go and download c1h. Then, before installing open up the registry to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Novell/NetWareWorkstation/CurrentVersion. Double click MajorInternalVersion, MajorVersion, MinorIntervalVersion, and MinorVersion change the value to 91. Exit the registry. Run the install for c1h.
Hope this helps,
Josh

ConsoleOne 1.3.6h in Windows 7
Submitted by jb8691 on 12 March 2009 - 9:50am.
Had the same error about the version of the client being too low.
Changed the MinorVersion to decimal 91 and then it installed perfectly.
Then changed it back to decimal 0.
