I absolutely LOVE Xgl but from what I gather opengl games are NOT working up to scratch with it enabled. So I enter init 3, run the script to get back to xorg-X11 ( sam-switch x11), and startX and games work again, as normal. Repeat and rinse conversely for eye candy ( that is, sam-switch xgl).

Note: you should ( read: must ) overwrite the samples with YOUR default configs and custom ones respectively for x11 and xgl; then edit the sam-script bash script to adjust ~/.
