Everything old is nouvelle again

(View Disclaimer)

Thanks to all those who take a few minutes out of your day to read my ramblings. Some comments on my last post have gotten me to thinking… about fashion.

My wife reads a lot of fashion magazines. Inevitably these publications get left around the house, and of course I end up reading them all cover to cover.

The fashion industry has a great concept where trends are always repeated. They call this the fashion cycle. Every morning on my commute in to work I observe this in person. Apparently 80’s fashions are back in style now, albeit streamlined a bit from their original incarnations. I see endless streams of women wearing off the shoulder blouses that could have come from a Cyndi Lauper’s closet and an army of men trying to be Gordon Gecko. Thank goodness I don’t wear a suit to work!

As has been pointed out by some of the comments on my last post, everything old is new again in technology as well. Cloud computing many argue is simply an extension of “time sharing” from 30 years ago. Virtualization is not new either; it was invented by IBM for the mainframe! The truth is none of these concepts are new, I suppose they’ve just come back full circle and this is the nature of the fashion cycle.

This is precisely why I think Novell is in a perfect position. Granted I’ve only been here a few years, but when I looked up Novell’s history (http://www.novell.com/news/press/pressroom/history...) I learned that the company was founded in 1983! Not only that, but if you look at our company’s heritage Novell was at the forefront of the software movement and NetWare was a revolutionary technology that finally allowed a connected workplace.

For those that think cloud is simply recycled large scale LAN/WAN, this story is now starting to sound very familiar. I know it does to Novell and we’re using our expertise as the foundation of our cloud strategy moving forward. Perhaps the world of technology is on the verge of a new Novell cycle? What do you think?

I’m still looking for my old acid wash jeans. I knew keeping them would come in handy eventually…

Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).

It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.
