Problem:
Although Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop is by far the premier Linux Distribution for the Desktop, there are some software packages missing from the installation media that most ordinary users need.
Solution:
Over the last 6 months, I have compiled and optimized custom built RPMs for Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (and Server) to make it a viable alternative to any other Desktop OS. These RPMs are available at: http://www.pcc-services.com/sled10_rpms.html
Environment:
I followed quite a few guidelines on building these RPMs, such as not touching Novell's software (unless necessary to get more functionality) and making it easy to differentiate Novell's packages from mine, etc. Also, these packages are fine tuned for the GNOME Desktop, they will work with KDE, but are not optimized for it.
Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).
It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.
