Novell and Microsoft Expand Successful Interoperability Relationship

Novell and Microsoft are expanding on the successes of their interoperability relationship. In 2006, Novell entered into a historic partnership with Microsoft to bring new levels of interoperability and choice to customers worldwide. Now the two companies are announcing an expansion to that very successful relationship.

In order to meet the accelerating demand for interoperable Novell and Microsoft solutions, Microsoft and Novell have announced today a significant incremental investment in our partnership. Novell will also make an incremental investment to provide tools, training and resources for customers that purchase certificates. This investment does not extend the term of, or otherwise impact, the original agreement signed in November, 2006.

This is an important event that demonstrates both the durability and customer momentum of our relationship, which continues to yield Novell new customers that are seeking an enterprise-class Linux platform that is optimized to work with their investments in Microsoft Windows Server. To meet growing demand, we plan to ensure that our customers have the tools, training and resources to facilitate their move toward one enterprise-class Linux platform—specifically, the optimal Windows Server/SUSE Linux Enterprise Server interoperability solution. Novell and Microsoft will run an expanded interoperability program to solicit customer input about the tools, training and resources that will be most useful to customers running mixed source environments.

Novell Collaborates with VMWare

Novell is collaborating with VMware to improve Linux performance in VMware environments by incorporating support for the VMware Virtual Machine Interface (VMI) into the SUSE® Linux Enterprise kernel. Demonstrating their commitment to provide open interoperability and optimization for virtualized environments, the companies have worked together to optimize SUSE Linux Enterprise for the VMware platform.

“Customers are looking to interchangeably deploy their server operating systems and their related workloads on both physical and virtual servers,” said Al Gillen, research vice president, System Software at IDC. “The goal of any hypervisor is to deliver the flexibility of virtualization accompanied by the performance delivered by a physical deployment. This joint effort directly addresses those requirements for SUSE Linux Enterprise customers.”

Announced at VMworld in September 2007, the enhancements have been in development for the past nine months, and the code was released as part of SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP2 in May 2008.

Improved Performance
As part of this collaboration, Novell has modified the SUSE Linux Enterprise kernel to support the VMware Virtual Machine Interface (VMI), a communication mechanism between the guest operating system and hypervisor that simplifies the task of virtualization. Adding VMI patches to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server improves its efficiency as a virtualized operating system when running on VMI-compliant infrastructure and offers better interoperability by allowing the same kernel to run on physical machines. This simplifies virtualization and makes SUSE Linux Enterprise Server a more efficient guest operating system when running on VMI-compliant hypervisors.

“VMware is pleased to be working with Novell to further increase the benefits of running SUSE Linux Enterprise on VMware Infrastructure,” said Parag Patel, vice president, Alliances at VMware. “Performance is an important attribute for customers when virtualizing their Linux systems. Working with Novell brings the benefits of virtualization such as reduced costs, improved operational efficiencies and faster performance, to customers running SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP2.”

Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager for Open Platform Solutions at Novell, said, “Our collaboration with VMware deepens the business relationship between our companies, ensuring customers have the choice to run SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with optimal performance in physical or virtual environments. This is an important step forward in Novell's continued commitment to deliver the best engineered and most interoperable Linux platform for mission-critical computing from the desktop to the data center.”

Novell Joins Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program

Novell has joined Microsoft’s Server Virtualization Validation Program. As a result of Novell's participation in this program, customers will be able to confidently run Windows Server 2008 as a virtualized guest on top of the Xen hypervisor in SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and receive cooperative support from either company. Novell is currently running the tests required by the validation process in the Server Virtualization Validation Program, and expects the tests to be completed by August 2008.

Microsoft today formally announced the Server Virtualization Validation Program, a new program to enable vendors to validate the combination of Windows Server 2008 as a virtual machine guest running on third party server virtualization solutions. Under the program, vendors will self-test and validate certain technical requirements of their server virtualization software running Windows Server 2008 as a guest operating system.
Through the existing Novell-Microsoft technical collaboration agreement, Novell was an early participant to the Server Virtualization Validation Program and helped Microsoft fine tune many of the parameters of the Server Virtualization Validation Program. This work included helping to define and validate the technical tests and using the joint Microsoft/Novell Interoperability Lab in Cambridge, Mass., as a test-bed resource.

As part of its extensive interoperability agreement with Microsoft, Novell holds a unique position as SUSE Linux Enterprise is currently the only Xen hypervisor on which Microsoft will provide full support today for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 running as a virtual guest. Microsoft's Server Virtualization Validation Program is designed to provide customers with additional peace of mind.

“We continue to hear from customers that they want to run Windows Server 2008 as a virtualized guest on top of SUSE Linux Enterprise,” said Carlos Montero-Luque, vice president of product management for Linux and Open Platform Solutions at Novell. “Novell is excited to extend the on-going technical collaboration efforts between Novell and Microsoft to the Server Virtualization Validation Program, which will give customers the performance, security and reliability that comes with running Windows Server 2008 as a virtual guest on SUSE Linux Enterprise.”

The Server Virtualization Validation Program defines a set of technical tests that third party virtualization solutions must pass to become validated by Microsoft. The program also enables vendors to validate various configurations so that mutual customers deploying Windows Server on those configurations can receive cooperative technical support in virtualized environments. Customers with validated solutions will benefit from the support provided by Microsoft as a part of the regular Windows Server technical support framework.

“Novell played an important role in helping us architect and fine-tune this program,” said Zane Adam, senior director of virtualization strategy, Server and Tools Business, Microsoft Corp. “This is just one more illustration of how Novell and Microsoft are working together to develop interoperable virtualization solutions.”
