I was wondering how unusual you think it is to be working in your own time, at the weekend? I guess I've done it ever since I became a network administrator: you know what it's like, you're not allowed downtime during the week, so evenings and weekends are the only time you can get changes done. Now that my network has only one user (me) I don't need to worry about when changes are done (I work from home, and although my wife has her office at home also, she has her own separate broadband connection, sensible woman!) but I still can't get out of the habit of working weekends.

Shaun, I can't think of any

Shaun,
I can't think of any responce apart from
"Isn't that just because you don't have a life?"
Which is a little harsh even for me. But I'm taking a small break from the never ending packing that comes from moving to from one relativly small island (The UK) to a tiny one (Bermuda), and my brain isn't up for more witty remarks. (Was it ever? )
Have fun
Marcus

I may not have a life my old friend, but I do have a spellchecker ;) I'm glad that the digital world will still allow us to trade "comments", even when we've ejected you from this island :)

I apologise.
Shaun works too hard. It's a holiday weekend in the UK as well as the UK - and he's working. Late. Again.
Here's a snippet from a mail I just sent to Shaun:
Is it a Bank Holiday in England? Is it midnight? I'm going to comment on your //other// post..
[Disclaimer - Shaun - we love you really. You are probably one of the most dedicated support people we have.]

Being a network

Being a network administrator myself I certainly understand the need to work weekends and evenings, and quite often I enjoy the ability to focus without interruption. It is only when I would rather be doing something else that it becomes a PITA.

luckily (and I do count myself as fortunate) I work from home, so even when I work late, I don't need to worry about the commute!

OK I confess I"ve tried ( really hard) to go for at least a few hours without reading my e-mail and I can't.
Whats the longest you've been without e-mail?

If I'm on vacation, a week!
Submitted by Shaun Pond (not verified) on 21 August 2006 - 11:28pm.
If I'm on vacation, a week! That assumes that the vacation is taken away from home, of course - if I stay at home, as I found to my cost, I end up working from about 6:30am to say 2-3pm, and count that as a day off :)
Generally, I find that 2 hours is about as much as I can take without checking (if I go to watch TV I usually take my laptop with me, but recently that's been curtailed, as I have one of the potential "bonfire special" batteries!). Now just because I've checked my mail, it doesn't always mean that I feel obliged to act on it immediately ;)
