Would You Join a Community of Practice?
We have internal Communities of Practice at Novell. For example, there is a Community of Practice for Systems and Resource Management, which is a community that caters to everyone at Novell that has an shared interest in everything ZENworks. Every six months we meet as a group of leaders (those who lead and guide the community efforts and projects) to discuss new efforts, and most importantly, Breakthrough Projects. I have taken the leadership position on one of those projects, and that is to take the Community experience (including projects, sharing, and other efforts) outside the boundaries of corporate Novell.
So... What Are Communities of Practice?
Communities of practice are formed by people who engage in a process of collective learning in a shared domain of human endeavor: a tribe learning to survive, a band of artists seeking new forms of expression, a group of engineers working on similar problems, a clique of pupils defining their identity in the school, a network of surgeons exploring novel techniques, a gathering of first-time managers helping each other cope. In a nutshell:
Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

What we plan to do is get closer to our customers, partners, and all others that have an interest in Novell, Novell technologies, and the overall future of Novell. To do this, we would like to expose projects and other efforts to those that would be part of a global Community of Practice (CoP). This is a voluntary position, but requires an effort on the part of those who are involved at either a Core Team, or Member level. In other words, you can directly impact the projects that our communities have on the go. I think that's pretty cool... don't you?
