One of my colleagues (EZS) and I have been tossing around the idea of writing a new book covering ZENworks solutions design, architecture, best practices, ITIL, etc. etc. etc. A book that covers ZENworks stuff prior to administration, which is being well covered by Mr. Ron Tanner.

I'd like to hear back from you regarding topics that you think MUST be covered in the book... we'll keep you up to date on progress as well.

Post your comments here... or email me at mschouls@novell.com.

Cheers.

One piece that I think would

Submitted by Ian (not verified) on 25 October 2006 - 5:47pm.

One piece that I think would be useful is a base line, scalable, install. I know that anyone planning on using ZEN needs to deploy it in a thoughful way, but having a stepping stone to base all of the other topics off of would be nice. It might be an appendix, possibly called "Get started quick" or something along those lines. And something in a casual style of writing would help to. In other words, instead of the base documentation writing style, something which would be more along the lines of the way you might talk to another admin in person. Such as, "just remember, if you don't have DNS setup, each workstation needs an entry in the hosts file for the import server(s)". That might be a bad example, but hopefully you understand what I'm getting at.

That's one of the reasons I like to start with non developer docs, and use a 3rd party document written by a consultant or admin. It presents a "real life" tone to the material. Then I follow it up by the official docs once my feet are wet.

That's just the way I like books to be. It's a personal preference. But, that's just my 2 cents. Good luck!

We used to have ZENworks

We used to have ZENworks 'Under the Hood' and ZENworks 'Lab Guides' - there's no reason why we can't do them again. Usual constraints .. only so many hours in the day and all that.

I'd also like to give a plug for the Cool Solutions Wiki - http://wiki.novell.com/ - specifically the ZENworks Linux Management Cook Book. That's still work in progress - but community help really gets these things moving.

RE: >> One piece that I think would be useful is a base line, scalable, install. -- Agreed!

I would add to this, since ZEN is cross platform, the biggest problem I have when searching Novell.com is most of the advice assumes the Netware Platform. I realize that will change over time, but I need something today that will help with issues doing installs on the Windows and SLES platforms.

RE: >> best practices

AMEN. I find the Novell documentation very weak in this area. Give me a scenario, configure it, and help to understand the reasoning to why.

The tone of the comments, and the clarity of the tips in most cool solutions articles is the kind of material we need, just more of it.
