Don't you hate that, when something you've worked with for several years, something that you just can do with your eyes closed, if something like that gets changed?
Well, that's what Novell just did, we changed our filefinder and moved our patches to the Novell downloads site. Unfortunately with the old filefinder and the patch-building process behind it, we where running into more and more limitations and as such it was time for some change.
OK, so is this new tool the perfect thing? Hmm, I still need to get used to it and many of my customers and co-workers seem to have the same feeling. Probably we all just have to get used to the new download page and have to get familiar with the search options, however I know there are several issues and enhancements that are being worked on (like the problems for people in France that have some difficulties to get access to the patches).
If you want to know more about downloading patches through the new system, have a look at the FAQ page that got created for this (this page will probably updated when some additional questions will be asked frequently).

To answer, yes ;)
Already submitted my feedback at the bottom of the downloads page.
In the meantime, has anyone figured out how to search for a specific NLM or other file, and retrieve a "hit list" of all the patches containing that file, including the file's date within all the various patches, like you were previously able to do with FileFinder?

Oh heck yeah. Searching for a specific NLM included in a patch was something I didn't do often, but was something I ALWAYS did before calling in for support. No point calling in, if there is a newer version of whatever is giving me grief. I'm really going to miss that.
Also with the missing, is being able to read the readme without having to log in. I don't consider that a download.

That's one of the things

That's one of the things many people have been asking for. Last thing I've heard was that it's in the top-3 list of thing's being looked at...
Will add a comment as soon as I know something more.

Ok, thank you. Any chance of re-instating FileFinder until this functionality is brought back?

I have already sent a gripe

I have already sent a gripe email to the webmaster regarding this change but I wanted to add my two cents to this thread.
Filefinder was an invaluable tool for me and for many of my Novell tech friends. None are happy about this change. Until you have full functional parity with filefinder, put it back and wait until the new solution really works. I would be crucified if my IT projects were accomplished in this manner.

The lost of the file finder
Submitted by Roger (not verified) on 18 January 2007 - 3:02pm.
The lost of the file finder feature is a real pain. There are a number of Novell TIDs that refer to certain file releases. File finder is key to find these releases.
The old html structure of the patches download area was also very good for getting an overview of what was going on with different products as you could move between different products quickly. The new drop down environment is far slower, as you have the database can you not just write a report to generate the old html pages?

As Roger mentioned ' The old html structure of the patches download area was also very good for getting an overview of what was going on with different products as you could move between different products quickly.' This is a real miss. I already feedbacked to Novell about that one.
There seems to be a problem with the patch search (or the labeling of them). When searching for 'Novell Client' you see 10 post sp3 Novell client patches. But if you futher drill down by selecting 'Novell client 4.91 sp3 windows xp/2003' you just find 2 patches.

Regarding the file search, see the response I gave to Eric
If all goes well, there will be an update so that you'll be able to read the readme without having to log in, thanks for the feedback.

The real problem is Novell's
Submitted by Marty McCafferty (not verified) on 22 January 2007 - 7:26am.
The real problem is Novell's disconnect with its customers. Not understanding how important filefinder was is just another disapointment from Novell.
My company is deciding what platform to move to from Netware, I question if sticking with Novell is the right answer. The "new" Novell does not seem to have its customer base in mind and does not seem worried about loosing them.
I know I like to be able to find the files that would fix any issues quickly.

Just to balance the comment
Submitted by Roger (not verified) on 22 January 2007 - 10:20am.
Just to balance the comment from Marty a little. From my point of view all these changes are not affecting my choice of Novell products over those available from other vender's. The product releases over the last 2 years have been worth upgrading to or even migrating across too, but poor changes like this are making it harder to get things done and fix things when there are issues. The change to filefinder was a major blow as I was looking for a fix and to loss all the old features turned a 10min hunt into a major project. As such is not much of a step forward.
