With all the news around ZENworks Configuration Management we would almost forget to mention that we just released ZENworks 7.2 Linux Management, it's available at Novell Downloads.
OK, so what's all the good news coming with 7.2?
- The 7.2 release is a free upgrade for all ZLM 7 customers, so if you are an existing ZLM 7 customer, just grab the update from the web and get to the new release.
- Cool thing, the Dell management features (Like BIOS and RAID configuration) that only used to be available in the Dell Edition for ZLM only are now part of the 7.2 release as well.
- Not only support for SLES on 32 / 64 bit Intel / AMD, but also on Itanium, IBM Power and zSeries
- And yes we do run on RHEL as well ;-)
For more features, have a look at the info available on the download page.

The inclusion of the Dell

The inclusion of the Dell software channels is excellent! This means a far more manageable enterprise for Dell/Linux customers!
Is there any chance in the near future of ZENworks Configuration Management being able to include Dell channels for Windows too? The combined ability to use ZENworks to deploy software and firmware to all enterprise servers would be awesome!

Well, as Martin mentioned in one of his comments “The next release - end of this year - will manage Linux”, that's where we will get Linux Management integrated with ZENworks Configuration Management. Wait and see ......

One of the problems we find with ZENworks Patch Management is that it doesn't sell due to a relatively high cost compared to Microsoft SUS. It'd be really great to see a way that a 'budget' implementation of a component of ZENworks could grab the updates from the Microsoft Update service and deploy those updates via the ZENworks agents according to policies managed within ZENworks. Ideally this functionality should also not require a Windows server. This would save on another Windows server license in the small to medium enterprise.

A bit off-topic (as my post was regarding Linux Management) but an interesting question.
Yes, ZENworks Patch Management might be more expensive compared with SUS, it however has some additional functionality that SUS doesn't offer. It's ability to detect vulnerabilities and the ability to run reports on this differentiates ZPM from it's competitors.
As we shown at BrainShare, Patchlink is working on a tight integration with ZENworks Configuration Management and the plan is to have this running on a Linux back-end as well, no Windows server needed.
