OK, so we've got Hot Patch 4 out the door, details as usual on the update TIDs - ZDM7 and ZDML7 TID3484245 ZSM7 TID3809227

This time we've got an extra thing for you: the imaging files are also available as a separate download (see TID3484245 for details) if you don't want to install the entire hot patch just to test updated imaging files - let us know how this works for you...

Like we did for Hot Patch 3, we've created CPKs for this patch, let us know what you think...

Ok,

In the interest of keeping the "rest of us informed" how about something in actual english instead of "ZDM7SP1/ZDML7SP1/ZSM7SP1 Hot Patch 4 - and the CPKs".

I am quite sure the folks "in the know" realize you are refering to ZenWords for Desktops Manager" but common. I am as big a Linux fan as anyone else, but lets not go pure acronym shall we?

Thanks mucho!

You're right, of course, it's very easy to get caught up in abbreviation-land. On the other hand, I would have hoped that most people who'd need these patches would be familiar with these particular ones, sorry to have caused confusion, let's see if I can improve it... :)

I wouldn't sweat it too much Shaun. Blogs are informal. Better to get the info out quickly. If someone is confused, they've got the comments to help clear things up.

Shaun,

My comment was not about makeing me, or anyone else for that matter, happy, it was about clarity. Clarty != happiness. Clarity = good communication. Clarity = inclusion. Clarity = not alienating folks that do not live in a world of acronyms and abbreviations.

I personaly believ in brevity, but only to a point. This is one of the things I personaly would guard against as Novell pushes deeper and deeper in Linux, the tendancy of *nix people thinking they are only talking to each other.

The tendancy to start talking in *nix-speek in my opinion is one of the things that drives a lot of people away from *nix. *nix has to move beyond the "club" mind set and start moving towards the "We need to be clear, use actual words and phrases that are not completely obfuscated by techno-speek to communicate with the masses we want to adopt both our paradigm and our products" mind set.

Best Regards,

- FG

Shaun, why is the imaging

Submitted by Werner Seifert (not verified) on 29 April 2007 - 1:17am.

Shaun,

why is the imaging kernel not beeing updated to the latest version? With the current version 2.6.16 imaging on newer hardware without legathy ide controller for cd-rom, dvd-rom and hd (only SATA Chip on board) fails using Imaging Boot CD. In TID 3484245 (Updates to Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management, Novell ZENworks 7 SP1 Hot patch 4) this issue is claimed to be resolved (TID 3756792 - SATA CDROM drives are not recognized by ZENworks Imaging kernel), but this is not true. The imaging kernel inside the Imaging Boot CD iso file from HP4 is unchaged. For SATA support at least kernel 2.6.18 is required. Can You provide us with a iso file with newer kernel?

For reasons I don't fully

Submitted by Shaun Pond (not verified) on 29 April 2007 - 4:15am.

For reasons I don't fully understand myself, we don't usually update kernel versions with hot patches, only Interim Releases and support packs. However, this fix was made some months ago with hot patch 2 - if you're still having issues, it may be that you require a different fix. Have you looked at the forums to see if others are experiencing the same problem?

Submitted by Werner Seifert (not verified) on 29 April 2007 - 10:29am.

I have looked into the forums and found only TID 3756792 as solution and some imaging kernels updated to work with SATA CD Roms by some forum readers (non official pathes). I have tried all of them, but nothing works with intel motherboards we are using on our university campus. What I have seen and investigated is the need to update the imaging kernel at least to 2.6.18, better to the latest availiable version 2.6.21 which are fully suporting the SATA interface. I also cannot understand why Novell is not updating the imaging kernel to the latest versions, is novell not present in the forums? For a long term success novell should try to be in the first row if newer technology like SATA CD Rom drives or something else is put on the road to customers otherwise other solutions and products with faster response to such changes are selected in the future. For Novell it should be very easy to integrate the newest kernel sources into the imaging kernel (download - compile - put on the web), for people outside without having the developing environment it is impossible (or can you provide us with a url to download the environment to update the kernel?).

We haven't released the new

Submitted by Shaun Pond (not verified) on 30 April 2007 - 9:03am.

We haven't released the new kernel because we base the imaging code on SLES code, and SLES 10 SP1 is not yet released - we need that before we can consider putting the new version into a hot patch, I'm afraid.

Submitted by Eric (not verified) on 30 April 2007 - 10:59am.

Any rumblings that this (Imaging kernel updates being tied to SLES releases) may change in the future? It's got to be one of the top issues w/ Imaging, if not the #1 issue. Perhaps if you could elaborate as to why it is the way it is, that might help customers understand.

Not directed at Shaun....

Once again a hot patch for Zen Imaging proves to be junk.... This part of the Zenworks product is absolute trash.... I will not bother listing the issues this doesnt fix and issues it introduces here... just look at the support forum

CPKS are the MSIs of this

Submitted by Martin Irwin (not verified) on 1 May 2007 - 7:26am.

CPKS are the MSIs of this world and RPMS but they can install/update or refresh to NetWare LINUX and Windows. Yes they are cross platform.

CPK stands for Compiled Package. You can create your own or go to the cool solutions database and grab a already compiled package. They start out in life as a SPK ( Software package) which you add your own logic and files to before you compile into a CPK.

Here's the database. Yes it there is a commuity of people out there who have already contributed their own templates and neat ideas of how to use them.

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/18494....

Did I say that unlike A MSI or RPM they are cross platform? Oh yes I did.

DId I say that you can deploy them without ZENworks server Management? Oh no I didn't so now I've said it...

Submitted by Shaun Pond (not verified) on 1 May 2007 - 8:34am.

The engineers used to get kernel updates from kernel.org - they decided to move to using the SUSE kernel, I wasn't party to that discussion, so I can't tell you why that was, but it's what we have now. I know we don't want to be putting beta linux code out, and I don't think that's the ZENworks team's call... We're working to try to make the imaging updates more frequent, but that's not in my hands - here's where you can leave a message for folks who are more able to make changes http://www.novell.com/coolblogs/?p=790

I used the separate imaging

Submitted by Bruce Little (not verified) on 8 May 2007 - 7:14pm.

I used the separate imaging files download to update the sys:\tftp\boot files. I was surprised in the download there were no instructions on where to place these files, but I figured it out through other documentation.

I am trying to use ZFD imaging to image a Windows XP Panasonic CF-30 toughened laptop to a ZEN imaging server to use for police department laptops. The network card is a Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet card.

When I PXE-boot and use te maintenance ZENWorks imaging process, it never loads the NIC driver and doesn't create a RAM image and I am taken to a Manual Install. From their, the sky2: Marvell Yukon 2 Gigabit Ethernet driver appears to load or I can use the SysKonnect SK-98xx Gigabit driver, but with either of these drivers loaded, I can't continue.

Is there a trick to getting the driver to load on boot or do I have to use a different driver and how is this done?

Thanks for any help!

The imaging files are a bit

Submitted by Shaun Pond (not verified) on 9 May 2007 - 1:52am.

The imaging files are a bit of an experiment: they're designed for folks who just want to update their imaging environment, and all we did was pull those 4 files out of the main patch. You're right about the lack of documentation, I'll see if we can't do better next time...
The Marvell Yukon driver is broken in HP4 I'm afraid, a bit of human error... There are several threads in the Support Forum http://newsportal.novell.com/thread.php?group=nove...
or news://support-forums.novell.com/novell.support.ze...
which can help with a workaround.

[...] The latest Hot Patch for ZENworks 7 (see this post http://www.novell.com/coolblogs/?p=854) had a small problem with the Marvell Yukon card (and any other that used the same sky2.ko driver)… it didn’t work. Unfortunately, the wrong version of the driver was included; we’ve punished the guilty parties by making them work late hours without any cola, and we have a fix. [...]

For what it's worth, I do

Submitted by Doug Rutherford (not verified) on 25 June 2007 - 9:37am.

For what it's worth, I do appreciate having the imaging files separated out as a separate update / download. Like just about everyone else, I struggle with trying to keep ZDM Imaging going when the latest and greatest hardware shows up at my office. When the latest hotpatch comes out, I had only been applying the imaging bits anyway since I would rather not go through the testing and deployment of the rest of it if I only need updated imaging support. This will make that a bit easier.

Thanks - nice to know it can be useful. Sometimes, of course, other files have to be updated as well, but you can rest assured that quite a few of us are fighting to make this better...
