I forget this and have to relearn it every time I update VMWare on my machine (yes, it breaks with every update from VMWare). For the nitty gritty details I am running VMWare Server on SLED10 SP1, though this also affects VMWare Workstation. I am not sure if it broke with the update to SP1, or if it broke in one of the VMWare updates as I did them both at the same time back in one of the SLED 10 internal betas but at some point the browse button in VMWare started causing VMWare to hang. After much searching on the web I discovered the fix - though I could have saved myself a bunch of time by searching our own Knowledgebase first, as someone had already created a TID.
The fix, for which I can claim no credit, is to su to root and:
- cd /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libpng12.so.0
- mv libpng12.so.0 libpng12.so.0.old
- ln -sf /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
- cd ../libgcc_s.so.1
- mv libgcc_s.so.1 libgcc_s.so.1.old
- ln -sf /lib/libgcc_s.so.1
And that should be it.

I think I had the same problem at one point during one of the SP1 Beta's. And I am not sure I ever fixed it - it's likely a case of either having to install some -compat libraries or linking some of the other libraries you already have. I do seem to remember that the problem was caused by some libraries being compiled with GCC 4.2.0. Maybe someone on the forums has a better idea.

Submitted by Darren Davis (not verified) on 1 August 2007 - 10:51am.
I don't think that X86_64 makes a difference as I ran into this issue using VMware Server on my Intel based X86_64 machine with SLES 10 SP1 and the outlined fix solved it.
So, worked for me.

You need to link to libgcc_s.so.1 in /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 as well (note the -console in the path).

Hello,
Thanks for the fix. It works well on my SLED 10.1.
Didn't find any posts about this in the wmware KB.
Next step is to make hypervisor working with SLED and gnome to be rid of wmware ;)

Did the trick for me as well on SLED10 SP1 /VMware Server 1.0.4. Luckily, I found this answer on my very first google. Don't know what caused the issue, though, it just started out of the blue. Thanks.

Did a refresh install of SLES 10.1 with VMWare Server 1.0.4 and it worked fine. Make sure that you have a machine that doesn't have a other VMWare product installed.
