Field Memo: Windows 7 ZENworks Slides

Quick Reminder: Field Memo items are also posted on the End-User Computing Partner Enablement Resources page where you can find everything you need to be enabled on selling End-User Computing Solutions!

Slides: Novell ZENworks - Ready For Windows 7
These slides are based on a webcast Grant Ho, Sr. Solutions Marketing Manager for Endpoint Management, delivered last week in the Americas.

The presentation contains key materials to:

help the sales force position ZENworks in a Windows 7 conversation,

communicate the key value of ZAM, ZCM, and ZAV (what Grant calls the ZENworks Trifecta) as they specifically apply to a Windows 7 migration,

and reinforce key points around our differentiation and cost savings over the competition.

With our strong Endpoint Management emphasis to enable our customers to get to Windows 7, be sure to look through these and incorporate them into your customer conversations.

With our 2010 fiscal year underway, I am more excited than ever for what I am sure will be a fantastic year for our partner community and Novell.

To get the year off to a great start, now is an excellent opportunity for us to unite around a common set of goals and objectives for 2010 that will ensure our mutual success.

To that end, I would like to extend to you a very special invitation to join our second-annual virtual company launch on November 18, 2009.
What does interoperability mean for you?

You may have, and should have, noticed about Novell using the term interoperability a few times.

Wikipedia refers to interoperability as „the ability of diverse systems and organizations to work together„ This became one of Novell's key strategies in the past.
And many of Novell's applications already fit into this strategy. While some of them are already following this strategy path, others are still being developed and extended that way.
One of the products which has taken a great step forward in terms of interoperability is the Open Enterpriser Server. Especially Service Pack 1 of the Open Enterprise Server bought us a new technology called Domain Services for Windows.
Like almost no other feature this demonstrates how interoperability can look like.
With the Domain Services we provide Active Directory Services in an Linux environment, Windows environment or even in a mixed environment. We allow seamless authentication for desktops, applications and services.

For more information about Domain Services for Windows check this link:
http://www.novell.com/products/openenterpriseserve...

While many customers looked at this cool piece of technology, they quickly came up with use cases for it.

One of these often requested use cases was to leverage Domain Services with Citrix XenDesktop, that only supported Active Directory for authentication.
But recently Citrix and Novell worked together to provide our customers the support they have asked for.

Citrix posted their support statement here:
http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX123281

Novell does not formally list supported applications that leverage Open Enterprise Features, but in fact we do support them. Citrix solutions like XenDesktop is one of them.

However to properly setup XenDesktop with Domain Services you need some extra steps when installing XenDesktop or reconfigure the services on the Windows side.
One of the Citrix System Engineers created a simple nifty utility to help Administrators with that configuration which can also be done using just the Windows server registry.

You can find the tool and some additional setup informations here:
http://community.citrix.com/display/ocb/2009/11/07...

While this is a first step, we are currently engaging other major 3rd party vendors for support statements and certifications of Domain Services.

If you wish to see specific support for other solutions then let us know. We might not be able to chase down all of them at once but we would like to know which ones are your preferred vendors.

End-User Computing

I received an email this last week from GroupLink about a promotion they are doing around their products and BrainShare 2010. I thought it would be a great idea to collect all of these promotions and post them together in a single place. A blog seems like the perfect medium!

I only have this one promotion right now, but I am sure there are several others that will be made available. Please send them to me or post in this blog's comment section so that everyone can see what is available.

Of course, we want everyone to come to BrainShare and get the very most out of this technical conference. There are many new changes to BrainShare this year and a few throwbacks from previous conferences. I am very excited about seeing all of our customers, partners and friends. We want everyone who wants to come to be there. I hope that a few of these types of promotions/contests/giveaways/discounts will enable all of you to be there.

GroupLink

We at GroupLink would really like to do all that we can to ensure that BrainShare 10 is a great event! We would love to have as many people attend as possible. To help this happen, we have created a great promotion and detailed it on Novell Cool Solutions. http://www.grouplink.net/redir.asp?id=2009111101

The first 30 people who purchase GroupLink's everything HelpDesk, before the end of this year, and mention this email will receive a free BrainShare pass!*

Field Memo: Customer-Facing Video About Managing Endpoints

Video: Tips for Managing and Securing Endpoints in the Enterprise
In this video Grant Ho tells the viewer how his or her organization can be leaner, meaner, and greener by clearly describing the three capabilities of Novell Endpoint Management:

Manage and Optimize

Track

Secure

Send the link for this video to a customer that hasn't yet experienced
ZENworks. Chances are, one of these capabilities addresses a current
pain.

Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2 Now Available, & Other News

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2 Now Available

Novell is pleased to announce the general availability of Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 Support Pack 2 (SP2). The latest release includes a number of product quality enhancements, as well as opening the door to the new capabilities described below:

Auditing files in NSS on Linux is now possible with Novell Sentinel

FTP gateway for remote server access

Integrated migration tools enhanced for easier upgrades from NetWare

With NetWare reaching the end of general support in March of 2010, you should be making plans to upgrade now. With Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2, there's every reason to be confident in doing so. Entitled customers can download the product here. Additional information is available on the product home page. Finally, for upgrade-related offers and programs, click here.

Open Enterprise Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Compatibility

Please note that Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2 is compatible with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP3. Open Enterprise Server customers with the new support pack are free to deploy SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP3. Open Enterprise Server customers who do not have the latest support pack should NOT deploy SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP3. Intelligence has been built into the installation process to warn Open Enterprise Server customers if they are trying to deploy an unsupported SUSE Linux Enterprise Server service pack. If you see any of these screen shots DO NOT proceed with the installation.

Screen Shots:

Citrix Statement of Support for Domain Services for Windows

This week, Citrix posted an official statement of support for Domain Services for Windows. This statement means XenDesktop 3 and 4 customers can leverage Domain Services for Windows to reduce costs and increase productivity through Windows server consolidation. This is a key validation point for our technology and something many of you will be interested to know. In addition, a Citrix Sales Engineer has created a tool that helps you set up XenDesktop in a Domain Services for Windows environment. The tool is available here.
