Some of us still get the privilege of wearing pagers. With the advent of smartphones, the need to carry a pager diminishes. But they have their places - especially when you have no phone reception. Additionally, I wear my pager around the clock. My phone is usually near me, but it does need to get recharged and I may not be near the charger when I receive an important email.
Use a GroupWise rule to send important emails to your pager. Here are some of the uses I've had in place:
Keyword trigger - look for a unique keyword in the subject, something that you would not ever see. Give that keyword out to your family in the event that they need to reach you and you're out of cell phone range.
Subject trigger - look for a specific subject line. In my case, I am the administrator of a private listserv and any email going to the listserv requires me to review/approve/reject the email. I get an email notification when a fresh email has arrived for the listserv. I immediately get paged and can respond in minutes.
FROM trigger - look for a particular sender. In one case, I wanted to be paged every time a particular individual sent me an email. A bit extreme, but I need to know the instant I received an email from this person.
Message trigger - look for a particular phrase in the message. I used to commute on the turnpike and the rule looked at the FROM & Message (from the turnpike authority and message contained accident), so that I could determine if I needed to alter my course.
Let GroupWise keep you in touch with those that you want to stay in touch with! Even with a pager!
