How to get ConsoleOne running on Vista using Application Virtualization

(View Disclaimer)

One of our clients needed to get C1 working on Vista and not having to remote into an admin PC every time they wanted to do GroupWise admin work.

How to get C1 running on Vista using Application Virtualization

  • Create a Virtual PC of Windows XP (with the latest Novell client)
  • Install Novell ZENworks Application Virtualization 6.1 (ZAV)
    http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=wnVl36...
  • Start ZAV and take a snapshot of the virtual PC
  • Download and install Console1 (version 1.3.6h)
  • Add any snapins that you need (GroupWise, ZEN)
  • Then select "Capture and Diff" to complete the snapshot
  • Clean the snapshot up by removing any files/directory not needed and all registry entries as this is not needed
  • Build the Virtual app and name it accordingly ( i.e. V_C1_GW.exe)
  • Copy the virtual app to another location or USB drive.

Install the latest copy of NWClient for Vista then make the following changes to the registry
HKLM\Software\Novell\NetwareWorkstation\CurrentVersion

  • Change: MajorVersion to 4
  • Change: Minor version to 91

You can now run C1 on Vista with all your snapins. This should work with any App virtualization program (not tested yet).

Vista Ultimate 64-bit

This doesn't work on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I followed the article verbatim and keep getting the error about the client being lower than 4.91. Are there any other locations I need to change the base client version on vista.

Tried it as well on Vista Ultimate 32 bit, and Vista Business and it gives the error regarding the version of Client32.

C1 on Windows 7

It works on Windows 7, except you can't edit policies -- they open, but are not visible.

You can add those registry changes right into the virtual reg.

When you build the virtual application you can add the keys and values that are mentioned in the Cool Solution right into the virtual registry within the virtual application. This saves a step and you won't have to make additional changes beyond installing the Novell Client to the Vista workstations which will be running ConsoleOne.

Why is Novell unable to make C1 work with Vista?

Submitted by Anonymous on 10 December 2008 - 6:38am.

Why is Novell unable to make C1 work with Vista? If they need to come out with an entirely different version (a Vista version), why don't they just do it?! So many in my org want to move away from Novell because they won't make Zenworks 7 or C1 compatible with Vista.

ZCM 10 and ZCC are for Vista, C1 is for ZEN 7

Submitted by sfaber on 11 December 2008 - 12:01pm.

Novell is certainly capable of making C1 work with Vista, but has chosen not to for several reasons including overall Vista market penetration and the effective use of Novell resources on older and newer products.

ZENworks Application Virtualization powered by XenoCode is a tool that helps mitigate the risks in your environment that you refer to, allowing you to use ZAV with your current ZENworks 7 environment as you prepare to migrate to ZENworks Configuration Management 10, which fully supports the Vista platform.
