Every day, the news seems to get worse, not better. Since we woke up to the fact that we are in recession, the voices of doom have been quick to hammer additional nails in the collective coffin. Newspaper reports of cuts in spending across all industries – horizontal and vertical – do not paint a particularly pleasant picture.
New challenges face us every day, but it is important to keep in mind the possible opportunities that are created. Napoleon Hill once said “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed on an equal or greater benefit.” Sometimes, we have to dig deep.
In the Financial Times today I read that in the UK, that business secretary, Lord Mandelson, has plans to inject over 21GBP million in lending into small and medium businesses. For UK partners with a small business focus, this represents a great opportunity to help small and medium businesses save some money and cut costs within their IT space.
Many industries are introducing cost-cutting and compliance measures. Anyone who can help solve those problems will be greeted with open arms. There are also large businesses being broken up into smaller entities, and opening up the bidding process for tenders for IT initiatives.
I've sometimes been called a Pollyanna, and although it's a term that is used pejoratively, it's a name I embrace. It's only by approaching challenges as opportunities, and looking for the benefits that each situation contains that we can not only maintain sanity, but also survive and even thrive in these troubled times.
So the question is: looking at your current customer list, how can you help them cut their costs and make sure they stay in business? What special offers can you give them? What additional OpenSource products can be installed in their Linux environment to help them remain viable during the downturn?
