LUM-enabling pure-ftpd: Quick and Easy

By Darcy Partridge

Editor's Note: This topic was previously touched on in a 2005 AppNote called "PAM Integration with eDirectory and LDAP." However, much of that information is now obsolete, so we have removed the AppNote from Cool Solutions, and encourage you to read this TID for the correct approach.

Environment
Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2)
Novell Open Enterprise Server 1 (OES 1) Support Pack 2 Linux
pure-ftpd (an FTP server)

In OES (Linux), depending on the version of OES and the Install / Configuration options used, pure-ftpd may not already be LUM enabled, and in some cases there may not be an option in YaST to accomplish that. However, this is very easy to accomplish. Other documents have been published on this subject, but sometimes take more difficult routes, or spend a lot of time covering the underlying technology or theories. This unfortunately can make it sound much more difficult than it actually is.

For those already familiar with pure-ftpd in a SUSE Linux environment, there is only a couple of steps needed. But additional points will be discussed here for those who are not already familiar with pure-ftpd, Linux, or OES, and to cover commonly-encountered problems.

For complete details, read TID 3503915.

Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).

It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.
