Now that you are all excited about MonoTouch you can get your hands on an evaluation version and see what it can do!!

The evaluation version limits you to using the iPhone emulator that is part of Apple's iPhone SDK for development and testing. This will give you a good opportunity to see what can be done with MonoTouch.

Download the evaluation version at http://monotouch.net/DownloadTrial

Mono comes to the iPhone and iPod Touch

It's pretty hard these days to miss all the hype around Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch and the App Store. Thousands of applications are available for just about anything you could think of and quite a few you might not want to think about. Until now a developer who wished to create applications for this fast growing market had to learn Apple's Objective-C. But no more!
Using MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net) developers can now use their Mono (or .NET) skills to create applications that run on the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

Using the MonoTouch compiler developers build native applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch from their source code and libraries, no additional runtimes or interpreters are needed. MonoTouch also allows for the debugging and testing of applications using the iPhone emulator that ships as part of Apple's iPhone SDK (as well as on the actual devices).

Speaking of the Apple iPhone SDK, there are some basic prerequisites you'll need in order to make use of MonoTouch. You need a Mac (if you don't have one, this is a good excuse to get one!) and you'll need to be a member of Apple iPhone Developer Program, which provides the iPhone SDK that is also required. The iPhone Developer Program also includes access to the App Store in order to distribute your application. MonoTouch then provides the remainder of the tools required.

The MonoTouch website provides links to extensive documentation and a number of tutorials to help you get started.

Some useful links:

MonoTouch - http://monotouch.net/
Novell SUSE Appliance Program- Shorten The Sales Cycle and Extend Applications to the Cloud!

We are excited to announce that Novell has launched the SUSE Appliance Program, a complete business and technical initiative that enables Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), to quickly build, test and go-to-market with software appliances. An industry first, the SUSE Appliance Program revolutionizes the way software is packaged and developed, offering new market and revenue opportunities.

Software appliances provide a competitive advantage in today’s marketplace by:

Integrating a pre-configured combination of an application and an operating system into a single image

Reducing complex installation into simple steps - download, copy, boot

Offering customers faster time to value and smaller up front investment

Extending across multiple platforms and architectures – and even to the cloud!

Supported by market leaders like Adobe to Zmanda – with many more in between, this program demonstrates the significant momentum of software appliances across the industry.

With benefits including access to leading-edge products, development and technical support, and go-to-market resources, the SUSE Appliance Program gets ISVs plugged in.

To learn more about our market leading initiative that is reshaping the industry, please visit:

Working with Intel and the Linux Foundation, Novell is providing users and developers with an opportunity to test drive the Moblin v2.0 beta. Designed to provide Netbook users with the best possible experience, Moblin delivers the applications that are most important for those of use who use this small form-factor computer to handle email, web browsing, social networking and multimedia tasks all on an interface designed for the netbook screen.

You can get this preview from openSUSE at http://forgeftp.novell.com/moblin/iso/.

============== Very Important note!! =============
PLEASE NOTE: This technology preview using openSUSE will over-write any existing content on your netbook, so be certain that you first have a back-up and that your really want to have your system completely replaced by the Moblin preview.
============================================

Okay, so this will be lots of fun to play with, that's a given. But as a developer why should you care? Netbooks are the fastest growing segment in the computer industry today and present developers with a great opportunity to deliver applications specifically tailored to the netbook form-factor that consumers are demanding.

The Moblin.org website (http://moblin.org) has a couple of sections that will be of special interest to software developers. The Moblin SDK section (http://moblin.org/documentation/moblin-sdk) is well organized and provides information for everything from setting up your development environment to the tools to use and some very good coding tutorials to help get you started.

There is also a section that links to the API documentation for many of the key libraries used in Moblin. This save you a lot of time tracking this information down. And if you'd like to take part in the development of Moblin, join the mailing list and the discussions on the various areas of the website.

Takes some time to check out this exciting new concept and check back here for more on Moblin in the future.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Mono Extension

Using Mono 2.4 you can now develop and build you applications in Visual Studio or Monodevelop and deploy on SUSE Linux Server. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Mono Extension also allows you to leverage existing ASP.NET 2.0 code regardless of where it was developed. Developers are now free to choose their development platform. There is a tremendous amount of existing content around .NET development; from numerous books to online and class-based training available that can now be easily utilized by teams wishing to migrate their applications to an enterprise grade Linux. I've listed a few resource links below that contain a lot of useful .NET related content.

If you develop on Linux, the recently released Monodevelop 2.0 offers a free IDE for building your .NET applications on Linux and supports many of the .NET programming languages . It also features an integrated debugger, a visual designer and a full featured code editor. If you develop on Linux (or any of the other support platforms) go to the Monodevelop website ( http://monodevelop.com/ ) for more information and to download.

Microsoft offers free versions of their Visual Studio development tool at http://www.microsoft.com/express/download/. These versions are missing some of the features of the complete Visual Studio Suite, but do offer much of the power and capability of the full suite. With the Express versions of the IDE you must download the version for the language you use and the abridged version of their MSDN Library. If you are not an MSDN subscriber, the Express versions offer you an opportunity to experience the tools without the expense of the subscription.

ISVs and development teams in businesses and institutions can now experience what .NET has to offer while still realizing the ease of management and cost savings of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Resource Links:
SUSE Studio Beta Program for Independent Software Vendors

Developers are always looking for useful tools to help them with the many aspects of software development. From IDEs and sample code to distribution packaging tools, there's always the hope that a tool can be found to help speed up and ease the resources needed to complete a given project.

Well, if you haven't checked out SUSE Studio, now is your chance to see what this tool can do for you. Novell is now accepting applications for the SUSE Studio Beta Program for Independent Software Vendors. This is your opportunity to get some hands on access to see SUSE Studio in action.

In a nutshell SUSE Studio allows you to create an appliance, tuned to your specific needs. You pick the packages needed (and just the packages needed) for your application, do any configuration required and then SUSE Studio will build your appliance. The beauty is that you can create your appliance as a Live CD/DVD, a VMWare virtual appliance, a portable USB key bootable on systems that support booting from USB or a hard disk image that can be used to load your appliance on a piece of hardware. You can even perform installs from the Live CD/DVD or USB keys.

There is even a webinar coming up on May 12, 2009 titled "Virtual Appliances in Under 10 Minutes with SUSE Studio from Novell".

For details on the beta and a link to register for the webinar go to http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/SUSEStu... .
