Where are my LDAP wildcard searches in the Windows 7 client?

In doing Windows 7 testing, we've found that the LDAP wildcard searches, the option that allows you to type in a partial name with LDAP contextless login and have the client either fill in the name or give you a list if there are multiple matches, was missing from the client options.

It doesn't even appear to be possible to add it to the default config for an unattended install of the client.

After some testing, we found that the same registry entry that works in Windows XP works in the Windows 7 client!

Just add the following:

Key: HKLM\Software\Novell\Graphical Login\NWLGE\LDAP Contextless
Value: Allow Wildcards (REG_DWORD) = 1

If you add this value to the registry, the wildcard searches will work again.

Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).

It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.
