A Successful Relationship With the Attachmate Group Through Historic Engagements With Novell & PlateSpin

Longtime Novell partner Computacenter decided to build a services practise around PlateSpin products, effectively bundling PlateSpin Recon and PlateSpin Migrate as a virtualisation assessment and consolidation service. They successfully rolled this out over a five year period into over 100 customers, ranging from medium size companies to large enterprises.

Rise of BSM 2.0 from the Fiery Failure of BSM Marketecture

What is Business Service Management simply and why does it appear to have waned in discussion and answer the question has it failed, is the concept required, what's new?  Yes, the number one complaint in the market is still that IT does not understand the business, the level of frustration is rising and fuels the fire driving cloud computing and hosted services.

Business can buy easily, don't hear about operational processes, technology and why things don't work.  They hear a service, price and value delivered.  So what is BSM and why did it fail and why is it still the fuel driving the outsourced market.

Novell Operations Center 5.0 - The Eagle has Landed!

All development cycles/projects have code names until such a time a version number can be assigned to the release. This release was code named Eagle and thus the title! I must first say it has been a fast and furious year for the Novell Operations Center team filled with much change. Many thanks go out to the supporting cast of characters that delivered the product this year. The product has a fresh, clean look, a new name, improved quality and usability and many enhacements. As part of the updated brand a couple of integrations that are already available have never been called out on their own.

20 Years and Still Not at Service Level Nirvana

Why aren’t we at Service Level Agreement (SLA) nirvana? I mean really, we have had SLA tools for 10, 15 years or more. You probably have 1 or 10 or more tools that measure SLAs, of which most probably aren’t used. Why aren’t all of our data centers, applications, servers and everything else just numbers on some dashboard that we just glance at to make sure everything is good to go and that we are open for business?

Business Service Management Tool Buyers Check List

Business service management is a practice many organizations try to achieve with many IT management tools. There are many tools that contribute to a successful practice, but it is the integration platform that stitches it all together to make sense of it in real time. Quite simply put, a good business service management practice enables you to communicate service performance while maintaining control over the environment.

Top 10 Business Service Management Guiding Principles

What is a simple explanation of what Business Service Management (BSM) is and does – let’s take the BS out of the speak. I simply describe it as the ability for IT to communicate service performance (value) aligned with business objectives, while maintaining control over the infrastructure.

Baby talk and the cost of disaster recovery...

My son just turned 20 months old. It’s funny how at that age we measure age in so much detail, rather than just saying he’s almost two. Nevertheless at this age his little brain is developing at an amazing pace. As such he’s reached what some have described to me as the most terrible phase of life… the “What’s that?” and “Why?” stage. Everywhere we go and everything he sees, he’ll inevitably ask me “Dada what’s that?” and if my explanation doesn’t satisfy him he follows up with a “Why Dada?”...

Super Sunday and Business Service Management - Who's Making the Most of Marketing Spend?

The perfect IT storm hits this weekend in the States - Super Bowl Sunday, $3M 30 second ads, web traffic and opportunity to go To the Cloud! Victoria's Secret as an innovator already has the war wounds of 1999 and took almost 10 years for their next Super Bowl ad spend in 2008. So what does this have to do with Business Service Management?

Classify Your Services - The Golden Key to Business Service Management

Starting any project is daunting and Business Service Management as an initiative is often thought of as big, hard and complicated. My personal opinion is that stems from the fact that it cuts horizontally across the data center and does not reside in one sphere of influence. However, as a long time product marketing / product manager I find it can be quite simple. One service at a time, one service team at a time approach rather than boiling the ocean all at once. Let’s start at the top, the service, and work our way down and back up again in a series of posts.

2011 - IT Transforms and Becomes One with Business or "To the Cloud"

No more IT and Business - 2011 IT powers the Business!

Start of a new year and just 2 weeks into what will be the year of The Cloud and service providers and I am already tiring of To The Cloud. I would say I'm adding a 5th prediction to my previous post, however, if you keep up with IT Management news, the topic of this also being a year of IT Transformation is pervasive. As with most things IT, we require some marketing and a clever IT rally cry for the year. I'll have to think on that one and come up with something clever. Read on for a quick snapshot of the year of IT transformation discussion.
