Buckley is back!
Today is my first day back in the office after a 3 week vacation. What's so great about that I hear you say? Other than the fact that I'm incredibly blessed to get 3 full weeks of vacation time!
Well, for 3 weeks I lived outside of the world of technology.
No e-mail, no internet, no facebook, no twitter, no iPod, no PDA, no computer and almost no electricity.
Yip, I've just returned from living in a tent for 3 full weeks on the Northern coast of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). During my time I met wonderful people who totally live outside of our world of technology..... and they are happy, normal people! Hard to believe.
Imagine having to walk to the camp office to read the daily weather forecast instead of reaching for your PDA. Oh, and they only post one update a day!
Imagine having to walk across several camp sites to say "Hello" to newly met friends instead of sending an instant message or e-mail.
Imagine sitting around a camp fire singing camp songs or just trying to remember the tune and lyrics to your favorite songs instead of reaching for an iPod.
Imagine walking to the camp hall to meet with all the other campers for morning tea and catchup with each others adventures the previous day & evening instead of posting it on facebook or twitter.
It was an amazing experience and one that is highly recommended.
Of course what really made this possible is the fact that IDM was doing what it is supposed to do - manage identities. GroupWise was doing what it is supposed to do and just kept running and my NCS cluster remained as rock-solid as ever.

Usually during the holiday I go to mountains - mountaineering.
It is valid OTHER world.
You start to appreciate and notice that the person can make itself - the hands and a head from this that is at hand.

I had a similar experience, yet not quite as drastic, when the the the latest hurricane hit us hard a couple years back here in Louisiana. It was only for a few days and I wasn't in a tent but I realized how much I take the simple things in life for granted:
-gas
-ability to buy food from 30 different places
-ease of communication via mobile phone, text, internet, phone, etc.
-functioning toilets
-washing machine and dryer
-garbage disposal
-A/C
-stop lights
-fridge
-the internet and just how much i rely on it for information, work and entertainment
-tv
-radio
-lights
-a fan i can plug in if the A/C is out .. :)
... i could go on and on.
