If only someone had told me...

Have you ever come home after a full days work and suddenly noticed that you missed a spot shaving? Or maybe you went to the bathroom after a big meeting only to realize that the deeply interested look your client had been giving you was not due to your interesting sales pitch, but rather to that piece of your lunch that you were wearing but couldn't see.
The embarrassment you feel could have been so easily avoided if someone had just told you!

Such is it with today's IT driven businesses. No matter how much we think we know about our systems, it isn't usually until after a catastrophic failure that we realize we should have had some kind of management system in there that not only could have alerted us in advance, but told us where the actual problem lies and what is affected.

Enter BSM, the 800 Pound gorilla in the corner. Often when a new customer approaches us we hear "If only I'd known this existed…". If we were to do a cost / benefit analysis on purchasing a proactive management system versus a public failure (and the cost in both brand and business associated with that failure) the BSM system wins every time.

It doesn't matter if IT drives your manufacturing process, rolling a new car off the assembly line every 27 seconds, or if you use a homegrown application to allow consumers to trade stock online. It doesn't matter if your revenue is in the hundreds of millions or just a few million. If your business relies even a tiny bit on IT, a small failure can end up costing you some big dollars.

So let me ask you - do you know absolutely everything you need to know about your environment?

If your answer was yes, no worries, thanks for reading my post - we'll probably see you in a year or so :-)

If your answer was no, it's worthwhile asking yourself how you solve problems in your datacenter before they actually become problems. For a small investment a BSM solution can more than pay for itself in the first failure it helps you avert, not to mention the bottlenecks and single points of failure that it helps you find for future reference.

Vision future

There should be a risk manager who shall have vision to estimate the problems and keep everything to be ready in every aspect in each and every industry especially in those industries which this requires.

I agree. The problem is that all too often these risk managers are saddled with other activities that are viewed as "more important right now" and tend to have little access to the resources that can support them (like a BSM setup).

I think that a combination of a proactive environment and a risk manager is the ideal solution though, that way even if the risk manager is distracted his system warns him when it's time to start paying attention...
