A group of bits transmitted as a unit of information on a network. These bits include data and control elements. The control elements include the addresses of the packet's source and destination and, in some cases, error-control information.In packet-switching networks, a transmission unit of a fixed maximum size that consists of binary digits representing both data and a header.
