One of two methods that use keys to encrypt messages. The other one is Symmetric Key Cryptography (also known as Secret Key Cryptography). In Public Key Cryptography, each user has two mathematically related keys, a public key and a private key. The public key is readily available. The private key is stored as a secret in a key database file on the user's computer.
