Fixing the GroupWise 7 spell checker after uninstalling Firefox 3.x
Under some circumstances, uninstalling Firefox 3.x can cause the GroupWise 7 Windows client spell checker to break, causing crashes whenever the spell checker is invoked.
Previous suggested fixes, including replacing \windows\system32\msvcrt.dll do not always seem to apply to or work with newer versions of Firefox and/or GroupWise 7.
The Firefox uninstaller does not seem to remove shared components or registry keys, at least when using Firefox 3.5 or 3.6 on a Windows XP SP3 system. Complete dumps of the file system directory listings and system and user registries were compared from before and after Firefox was removed.
However, the Firefox uninstaller leaves a number of registry keys behind – those registering it as a handler for files and protocols of various types. These “dangling” references may be the cause of the problem.
In order to fix this, set your web browser default back to Internet Explorer, at least temporarily. Click on your Windows "Start" menu and select "Set Program Access and Defaults". Then select "Custom" and click on the down arrow icon. Set Internet Explorer as your default browser, it seems to immediately fix the problem in tests.
If you have Firefox installed at that point and you use "Set Program Access and Defaults" a second time to set the default back to Firefox, the GroupWise spellchecker continues to work.

The simple fix.

I've tried every solution I could find on the internet to fix this issue. None of them worked for me. After a week of md5 comparing files and swapping registry hives, these two registry keys are the only differences I found between a working spell checker and one that crashes GroupWise immediately.

The issue only appears if Firefox fails to upgrade. After the upgrade Firefox displays this error message.
XULRunner - Error: Platform version is not compatible with minVersion
Firefox can be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version, however this failed upgrade then breaks the spell checker for GroupWise.
