Innovation and the subway...

Technology used to be incredibly intimidating. My mother still refuses to watch a dvd on her own for fear of breaking something. For her, technology has always been the realm of computer scientists and engineers. Those gadgets weren’t made for her in mind, so she didn’t spend much time with them...

Baby talk and the cost of disaster recovery...

My son just turned 20 months old. It’s funny how at that age we measure age in so much detail, rather than just saying he’s almost two. Nevertheless at this age his little brain is developing at an amazing pace. As such he’s reached what some have described to me as the most terrible phase of life… the “What’s that?” and “Why?” stage. Everywhere we go and everything he sees, he’ll inevitably ask me “Dada what’s that?” and if my explanation doesn’t satisfy him he follows up with a “Why Dada?”...

The good old hockey game...

I attended an event in Los Angeles where I presented some of the challenges of disaster recovery in today's modern mixed platform datacenter. As a thank you for sitting through my presentation we all then went to watch the LA Kings beat the San Jose Sharks in a shootout.

How to create a PlateSpin USB bootable thumbdrive

I still find myself in a bit of a post-holiday daze and while digging myself out of the pile of work I need to catch up on, I've decided to post something that might actually be useful for once :)

You can't possibly beat free... or can you?

Not that I ever do this ;) but if you think about the process to download a movie. To do it for free, I first have to find the files from a torrent tracking portal. Then I have to know how to use a download client. Next I have to check the file is what I want, as well as scan it for any malware. If I’ve done all this correctly I can watch my movie, and even then with my luck the quality is probably terrible. My wife on the other hand actually values her time, so she uses Netflix. All she does is browse their catalog and have the movie stream in near real time; they even have HD!

You can only squeeze so much juice from one orange

Virtualization is great. It’s by most measures the most significant technology to hit the world of business since the internet some 25 years ago.

You have to go so far to get anywhere

Outside my window the city of Toronto has decided to dig up the road to resurface King Street. As much as the noise and dust is a nuisance, really the biggest inconvenience this has created is the massive detour that I now have to get to the sandwich shop across the street. It’s only about 30 feet away, but thanks to the construction and related barricades, it’s now a journey of almost 4 blocks.

Hey kid how much do you bench?

One friend I made, Eddie, was the strongest guy I have ever met. He trained just for power and his specialty was the bench press. Eddie got to a point where he could put up a 500 pound bench press in the gym on any given day like it was nothing. In a competition his numbers were even more impressive.
