I attended an event in Los Angeles where I presented some of the challenges of disaster recovery in today's modern mixed platform datacenter. As a thank you for sitting through my presentation we all then went to watch the LA Kings beat the San Jose Sharks in a shootout.

The past year was as full of business and technical innovations as any in memory, and there's no reason to expect less from 2011. Tis the season for Vegas, gambling and the Gartner Data Center Conference and thus many top 10 Predictions for the coming year. I'm not a gambler, take these as you may, but for those who know me might say she might just have a bit of challenge the status quo in her and a knack for blowing things up from time to time. As a bit of a researcher of the IT management industry, these are just my musings to add to recent flurry of top 10 lists from my friends on WorkloadIQ and Baseline that sparked my imagination of further possibilities. Here goes, a tad controversial, I welcome the discussion! :-)

Not that I ever do this ;) but if you think about the process to download a movie. To do it for free, I first have to find the files from a torrent tracking portal. Then I have to know how to use a download client. Next I have to check the file is what I want, as well as scan it for any malware. If I’ve done all this correctly I can watch my movie, and even then with my luck the quality is probably terrible. My wife on the other hand actually values her time, so she uses Netflix. All she does is browse their catalog and have the movie stream in near real time; they even have HD!

Virtualization is great. It’s by most measures the most significant technology to hit the world of business since the internet some 25 years ago.

What a fast year it has been and what a crazy last couple of weeks for us on the Business Service Management team at Novell. Wednesday was launch day for us and a very exciting time! A time to reflect as well as I spoke to many in the press this week always being asked just what this Business Service Management technology is, what do companies need, how does it differ from the competition, what is your longevity secret sauce and what makes it different than all the rest with this WorkloadIQ approach. I found this intriguing and a very exciting time for the technology in the days of mixed physical, virtual and cloud environments.
