GroupWise 8.0.2 Public BETA is now available!

(View Disclaimer)

Today, Novell announced availability of GroupWise 8.0.2 Public BETA.
It is available for immediate download. GroupWise 8.0.2 is still scheduled to release in June. It is a regular update to the GroupWise 8 product line, but it also contains several important changes that make GroupWise 8.0.2 a must for most organizations.

Today’s release is just Public BETA, final release is scheduled for June. We are working to coordinate the final Novell DataSynchronizer release with the final release of GroupWise 8.0.2. GroupWise 8.0.2 will be a requirement for the new Novell DataSynchronizer technology. There are around two dozen changes in the POA/SOAP communication layer that facilitate a full functioning mobility solution. Previous versions of GroupWise 8.0.1 can be used, but will have a series of issues that will not be resolved until you have upgraded to 8.0.2.

We encourage all of our GroupWise customers to prepare, not only to preview the Public BETA of GroupWise 8.0.2, but to also prepare to rollout GroupWise 8.0.2 when it finally ships in just a few weeks.

As a reminder, GroupWise 8.0.2 will also include several new enhancements. These enhancements include the following:

- Limit the # of recipients on an email
- Access Control Lists for the 'use' of System Distribution Lists
- Limit the types of attachments a user can send
- Teaming Integration - Searches in GroupWise also search Teaming repository
- Teaming Integration - Allow drag and drop capability from GroupWise directly to Teaming workspaces.
- Conferencing Integration - Schedule a Conference as easily as scheduling an appointment; Join a conference call directly from my appointments

Novell Conferencing is also scheduled for final release this week. Novell Messenger has been updated and will also be available for download later this month. It also contains some very cool integrations with Novell Conferencing. GroupWise 8.0.2 contains Integrations with Teaming 2.1 and Novell Conferencing. Our integrated approach to collaboration will have an impact on your organization’s productivity and management of your organizations’ content.

You can download the GroupWise 8.0.2 Public BETA here!

GroupWise 8.0.2 also contains fixes to address reliability concerns. Stability changes have been made to GWIA and GWINTER, as well as the POA and the Windows Client. We have also made several performance tweaks and API changes that will improve things with 3rd-party products, like BES. GroupWise 8.0.2 addresses changes required by the new BES 5.0.1, which RIM will release later this summer.

Extensive internal rollout of GroupWise 8.0.2 began several weeks ago and will expand and continue through the Public BETA. We have several current BETA sites that will also be participating in GroupWise 8.0.2 rollouts and pilots. These include our Novell Conferencing Authorized BETA sites and our Novell DataSynchronizer Authorized BETA sites.

The readme can be found here!

Feedback on Public BETA can be provided here!

Thanks,

Dean

problem with 8.0.2 public beta

Submitted by pkures on 21 May 2010 - 5:39am.

Sorry to post this here, but I'am somwhat under pressure and don't know what to do next. Client 8.0.2 solved our problem with signing only certificate - it didn't work in 8.01. It now works in 8.0.2, but not for SHA2-256 signature algorithm which is required by our customer. I've posted it to GroupWise 8 client support forum as 'Client 8.0.2 public beta problem selecting Microsoft Enhanced RSA and AES Cryptographic Provider'. Maybe you konw somoene inside Novell who is responsible for that part of GW client development. Thanks ,
Petr

8.01 Issues

Submitted by rutcherd on 21 May 2010 - 7:57am.

Wondering if some of the issues I saw in 8.01 are going to be fixed in 8.02?

1) Running multiple POA's on Linux no easy way to do this now in the gwha.conf.

2) The Groupwise client does not install correctly using Groupwise.msi (msiexec /i "groupwise.msi /qb). There are mapi issues. This does not make it easy for enterprise rollouts.

3) We are seeing alot of D107, D124, and deinitialization errors in the clients.

4) We are seeing a much higher utilization on the Groupwise servers after the clients upgrade to the 8.x clients

Thanks

Re: 8.0.1 Issues

Submitted by dlythgoe on 21 May 2010 - 9:56am.

Do you know if any SRs were opened on these specific issues?

Here is what I know for each of them, but your best resolution is to open an SR and get a defect logged.

1) Running multiple POA's on Linux no easy way to do this now in the gwha.conf.

We did not make any specific changes for this in 8.0.2. You can run multiple POAs on Linux and we are not aware of any problems. It does require that it is configured to copy over at every node.

2) The Groupwise client does not install correctly using Groupwise.msi (msiexec /i "groupwise.msi /qb). There are mapi issues. This does not make it easy for enterprise rollouts.

We have made changes to the install - most of them in 8.0.1 HP1. The real issue is un-installing GW7. Our install did not always lay down images in all of the right places and so upgrading from 7 to 8 has had its challenges depending upon the platform. We also changed many of the locations where GW8 is now installed to more standard Windows paths. Windows XP is still the most successful platform to upgrade.

3) We are seeing alot of D107, D124, and deinitialization errors in the clients.

We have addressed several D107 and D124 errors. Many of them have to do with Shared folders or Shared Address Books. The deinitialization errors are simply crashes and non-clean exits of the client. We have tracked down and resolved several of those as well. There were two, in particular, that several of our customers were seeing.

4) We are seeing a much higher utilization on the Groupwise servers after the clients upgrade to the 8.x clients

We have been watching this as we have received a few reports of higher client/server traffic and overall performance of the 8.0.2 code. Some of these are attributable to new features and functionality and are expected in some cases. However, we have made some changes to improve both of these areas - client/server traffic - especially on start-up of the client AND performance of the POAs. Not sure yet if these changes will be as significant as we hope. Still finalization a few test passes and our internal roll out with a more expected load will give us a better indication.

Hope that helps.

Client Issues Still not Addressed in 8.0.2

Submitted by marklar23 on 1 June 2010 - 6:59am.

There are 2 client issues that I've seen posted in a number of forum topics for the 8.0.1 client that are still not addressed in 8.0.2.

First, the option to Open Attachment/Open in GroupWise that was present in 7.x is still not present in 8.0.2b.

Second, when editing reocurring events, the prompt to designate whether to change "this ocurrance" or "all occurrances" is still not appearing. It is functioning more like a sticky option that performs whatever the last action was from the 7.x client, and there is no option to change this. I have a meeting room coordinatior that is on my case about this because she coordinates monthly meetings for items needed and catering, and when she updates "this month's" meeting with confirmation info it creates the confirmation in all ocurrances.

Re: Client Issues...

Submitted by dlythgoe on 1 June 2010 - 6:52pm.

Thank you for reporting this through my blog. Your best option for a solution, however, is to report these through NTS and to have an SR# assigned.

If I understand the issue: The first issue - Open Attachment/View was a design change made in GroupWise 8. We are not planning on adding this option back to the Windows Client. We found that very seldom, if ever, did users ever change this. Upgrading to GW8 would remember their current setting and would continue to function as it always has for that user. You can still access all of the functionality by either of these options:

- single click = view in GroupWise
- double click = open in native application
- right-click = still have all options

The second issue - recurrent events. I may need some additional details in order for us to understand exactly the experience that is causing problems...A few questions:

1. Personal Appointments or Group Appointments?
2. What are you editing? Subjects, Message Body, Distribution lists?
3. When you say 'confirmation info' do you mean attachments?

I am not recalling a change to this behavior between 7.0.x and 8, so may need to be enlightened.

Re: Requested Info

Submitted by marklar23 on 2 June 2010 - 6:52am.

Thank you for your follow-up, here are the info that you requested...

1. Personal Appointments or Group Appointments?
Personal Appointments on both GroupWise User and Resource Calendars

2. What are you editing? Subjects, Message Body, Distribution lists?
I've tested posting to my and the user's personal calendars, as well as the same resource calendar and get the same results. When either of us edit the subject of a posted reoccurring appointment, the subject for that instance only changes.

When I edit the body of a reoccurring appointment, just that instance is changed but no prompt is given for this/all instance(s) as there was in previous versions.

When my user edits the body of a reoccurring appointment, all reoccurring instances are edited with no prompt for this/all instance(s). This leads into the issue of your question 3.

3. When you say 'confirmation info' do you mean attachments?
The 'confirmation info' that I'm referring to is meeting information that user adds after initially scheduling the meeting. This can be information such as number of attendees, technology needs, room configuration, catering menu/provider, etc...

What is happening in GW 8.x is that when she adds any of this information to "June's" meeting for example, it is automatically updating all of the appointments with no option to select "just one" or "all." Then when she starts to edit July's meeting all of the confirmation information from June is already in place. which had initially confused her as she did not recall confirming the meeting. Now if she deletes this information in July but wants to reference what was scheduled in June, June's information is overwritten with July's data, and this happens across all reocurring instances.

When we rolled her GroupWise instance back to version 7.x when she performs the same actions as she tried in 8.x she receives a popup window asking 'This Instance,' 'All Instances.' 'This Instance Forward,' 'Cancel.' Currently in 8.x I can only get this prompt to appear when Deleting reoccurring appointments.

Re: Bug and work around...

Submitted by dlythgoe on 2 June 2010 - 4:52pm.

I was able to duplicate what you have reported. Still looking to compare between GW7 and GW8. I will log the defect.

You have definitely found at least one bug and maybe a couple.

We did find something interesting that may provide you some relief in the short term.

There seems to be some connection between your bug and Plain Text mode. In other words, if you compose/edit your recurring posted appointments using HTML as the default editor, you will be able to just update the current instance of the appointment instead of it replicating the message body to all other occurrences.

This is a short-term work around so that you can edit the message body of a single instance of a recurring posted appointment without those changes being propagated to every other instance.

Let me know if that works the same way for you.

Re: Confirmation

Submitted by marklar23 on 3 June 2010 - 7:04am.

I'm able to recreate the HTML/Plain Text mode issues as you have indicated, and now it makes perfect sense. I use HTML as my default editior which is why my updates do the single entry, the user uses Plain Text, which is why hers updates all of them.

The "switch mode" solution is a good work around, but I think with my users it may be a little too confusing and some will complain about how many steps it will take. I'm definitely pulling to get that popup window with "All/This/This Fwd" options restored, it seems to be the most friendly solution that users are used to.

Still not fixed? (GW8 recurring appt bug)

Submitted by ecyoung on 12 November 2010 - 1:33pm.

From the release notes for GW 8.02 HP1, it appears the bug with editing recurring appt's still isn't fixed.

I've tested and confirmed

Submitted by marklar23 on 12 November 2010 - 2:20pm.

I've tested and confirmed this already. You just beat me to the punch with the feedback. I'm just keeping the handful of systems on 7.x until it gets fixed.

This issue has not been fixed yet. Defect #611203. It is still scheduled to be fixed in 8.0.3. It all depends upon priority and demand.

Thanks for checking...

iPad Web Access support

Submitted by rpiskac on 6 June 2010 - 8:24am.

Any plans to support the Safari Web Browser on the iPad for web access?

dlythgoe's picture

Re: iPad Support

Submitted by dlythgoe on 7 June 2010 - 9:20am.

We will provide iPad support in a couple of different ways.

1. First/best way is through Novell DataSynchronizer - using the native applications on the device. We are testing this configuration now while we are developing the Mobility technology.

2. As part of Ascot, we are investigating expanding our webaccess templates to provide full functionality capability on the iPad and other tablet devices. The simple templates are obviously not enough and the current set of WebAccess templates have their limitations because of the interaction required for the iPad - like single-click vs double-click.

Hope that helps...

It's almost mid of July

Submitted by bschwegl on 10 July 2010 - 4:14am.

And GW8 SP2 is still not released.
Any ideas when the release date will be. First it was May/June, then end of June beginning of July and now?
As we need this as pre requisition for the beta release of the Mobility Pack, we would like to go ahead finally.....
We can't wait for the final release as almost all new mobile phones are not supported anymore by GMS.
Otherwise the arguments for GroupWise agains any other email system getting weaker and weaker and nobody believes our statements.....
Thank you for a feedback.
