Changing the Cleanup Properties of the Trash Folder

Problem

You want to change the cleanup properties of the Trash folder. For example, you right-click the Trash folder, select Properties, then click the Cleanup tab. This is the same dialog you get from Tools > Options > Environment > Cleanup. However, at this point it appears like you are modifying only the properties of the Trash folder. So, under 'Mail and Phone', if you change 'Manual delete and archive' to 'Auto-delete after' and select 30 or some other number of days, then ALL messages from ALL folders over 30 days old will be deleted. That's a problem!

Solution

You can modify the client interface to show only the settings for 'Empty trash' when the user right-clicks on the Trash folder and selects Properties.

Or, as an administrator, you can lock down the Mail and Phone cleanup to 'Manual delete and archive' to prevent loss of user data.

Environment

GroupWise client 7.0 and 6.5; probably earlier versions as well.
