Novell Demo Systems Newsflash

(View Disclaimer)

I am pleased to announce two major changes to Novell's demo systems. These changes will make the systems easier for Partners to use and improve the performance of remote demos accessed via the Novell Online Demo System (NODS).

Standard Image Set for Employees and Partners
In the past we have been unable to share our virtual machine images containing Windows and other Microsoft software with our partner community due to restrictions in our licensing agreement with Microsoft. Novell Demo Systems have recently signed up to the Microsoft VHD Test Drive Program, which for the first time gives us a compliant process for sharing customized Windows virtual machine images with our partners. As a result we have decided to standardize our DVD offering to a single kit that will be the same for Novell employees and partners. The next update we send out will be a complete replacement of the current DVD kit and will contain ALL of the Utopia vm images.

Licensing Implications
While the Novell-owned Linux images will continue to be supplied with PartnerNet demo licences the Windows virtual machines will ship with a 30-day eval licence. Utopia subscribers will then be able to choose whether to use them for the eval period or activate them using their own Microsoft MSDN or TechNet keys. Further advice regarding which subscription levels can be used for activation will follow shortly.

This is great news for our partners because it gives them a complete Utopia demo offering for the first time, without the need for them to build the Windows components themselves. We hope that this change will accelerate adoption of the demo system by partners and help them to win more Novell business through the use of high quality pre-built solution demos.

NODS Upgrade
The Novell Online Demo System aka NODS is a farm of servers on which Novell hosts all of the Utopia demos for remote-control access by employees and partners. We have seen significant growth in demand for NODS demos over the last year and have been planning an upgrade to the infrastructure for several months.
I am pleased to announce that the upgrade will be going ahead over the next couple of months, with new, faster servers going into the datacenters in Provo, Nuremberg, and Sydney. We hope the combination of new larger capacity servers and new functionality being developed for the NODS Provisioning Portal will deliver a better, faster service for your remote demo needs.

More details, including dates, will be posted here as soon as we have them. For more information on Utopia & NODS please visit

Happy Demo'ing!

Disclaimer: As with everything else at Cool Solutions, this content is definitely not supported by Novell (so don't even think of calling Support if you try something and it blows up).

It was contributed by a community member and is published "as is." It seems to have worked for at least one person, and might work for you. But please be sure to test, test, test before you do anything drastic with it.

Please Restore Utopia access for Silver subscribers

Submitted by mkijewsk on 28 January 2009 - 4:52am.

When I convinced our company to join Partnernet 2 years ago it was access to the Utopia demos as a silver partner that sealed the deal. Now after renewing this year, I see we no longer have access to Utopia. Since then Utopia and NODS has been restricted to Gold and Platinum partners. This change came as a surprise, and will likely result in our withdraw from the Partnernet program.

The value, as I sold it, was to be able to fire up a rapid demo of Novell services for executive overview in order to convince management to go with a Novell product. This has been very helpful in bringing in products like Access Manager, IDM, User App...as well as for simply keeping Novell products in general on the table as an option.

Many of us in Partnernet at all levels, as well as CNE's, CNi's, etc. are Novell evangelists. We need the tools to keep Novell products on the table as an option. With the state of the economy the way it is, the are few resources available to invest in a test environment to set up, test, evaluate, and demo competitive products to our decision makers. The trend and the safe path, is for them to go with the market share. We all know where that leads.

Therefore it is in Novells best interest that the NODS and Utopia resources be available for as wide of distribution as possible. Restoring access to these resources to silver level partners would make a 'sales' tool available to in house techies, and be a certain win for Novell. Adding these resources to the CNE, CNI, even CNA benefits would also benefit us Novell evangelists out in the trenches trying to keep excellent technology alive and well in the corporate world.

Important: Clarification of Utopia Entitlements

Submitted by cneal-novell on 28 January 2009 - 12:12pm.

Dear mkijewsk,

There must be some misunderstanding here. Nothing has changed with regard to partner entitlement to the Utopia and NODS tools.

The Novell Demo System consists of multiple parts:
* DVD kit containing VMware images
* Download facility for the same VMware images
* NODS: Novell Online Demo System -- the same VMware images again, this time hosted for you to access by remote control (no local installations necessary).
* Flash demos
* Online documentation and support forum.

The ONLY part of this that is not available to Silver partners is the DVD kit. ALL other components are, and have always been, available to every PartnerNet member.

For a Flash presentation on all things Utopia & NODS -- including PartnerNet entitlements, please see http://www.novell.com/rc/docrepository/public/9/ba...

That's great to hear,

That's great to hear, though your link above does not work. Also, what is the link to the Download facility for the VMware images? I cannot find a link on our Partnernet portal.

I just tried the webcast

Submitted by cneal-novell on 29 January 2009 - 5:16am.

I just tried the webcast recording link again myself and it worked fine. I wonder if your problem is related to the access rights issue that Richard referred to? Could you try it again not that he's had that fixed?

My comments were based on

Submitted by mkijewsk on 28 January 2009 - 1:37pm.

My comments were based on the fact that we cannot access the Utopia downloads through www.novell.com/partners/utopia nor can we access them through the PartnerNet portal. Also, the PartnerNet program guides states the following:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Demonstration Tools
Novell provides tools for self-contained virtual demonstrations of Novell solutions. These are now available at no cost to Gold and Platinum partners. Go to www.novell.com/partners/utopia for more information on these tools.

* Platinum: 2 subscriptions
* Gold: 1 subscription
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I apologize for my rant, but it was based on what I read and experienced...

Problem with access controls

Submitted by rholder on 28 January 2009 - 4:41pm.

mkijewsk,

I checked with the Partner Helpdesk and they found an error in your access rights. This is now corrected, you should have access to Novell Demo Systems.

OK, the access rights do

Submitted by mkijewsk on 29 January 2009 - 5:56am.

OK, the access rights do seem to be fixed - I can now access the Utopia demos 8-) . Though the link you posted http://www.novell.com/communities/node/6726/downlo... still gives an error "The item you requested does not exist on this server or cannot be served.".

Finally, It would be very helpful if the PartnerNet site posted a better link/access point to the Utopia Demos. The instruction stating they can be accessed under "Sales=>Sales Tools" is wrong. I finally found the link to the downloads on one of your old posts http://www.novell.com/communities/node/6726/downlo....

Good Feedback

Submitted by cneal-novell on 29 January 2009 - 5:18am.

Please don't apologize, we need to hear about it when our intended message doesn't come through clearly.

Thanks for notifying me of what the PartnerNet Guide says -- I'll check that out because the explanatiion you quote is certainly misleading and incorrect.

Regards,
Chris
