The end of print….

 InfoWorld Press Release

Twenty years ago I remember a conversation with a colleague that suggested computer printers would be out of business because everything was going online and nobody would bother to print anything out. Well tell that to the millions of trees that have nobly given their lives since then so we could all carry around the printed word.

Fast forward to today and International Data Group’s press release stating that as part of their “strategic transformation to a web-centric company” they will be delivering their last print version of InfoWorld magazine on April 2, 2007. Instead, they’ll focus on on a web-based version of the issue and InfoWorld branded conferences. In IDG’s words balancing, “the immediacy of online with the intimacy of events.”

The driver of course is advertising – or more importantly the lack there of, particularly in the print world. Can’t say I blame them, Novell has steadily shifted our advertising from print to online – consistent with the way many of you have expressed your desire to consume IT information in real time or face to face in vendor or media sponsored events.

And while I understand the move at a business level, I’ll confess to missing the printed word. It’s hard to catch up on technology trends electronically at 30,000 feet. I suspect that will be solved soon too though. For me, sometimes only “analog” will do. Will other stalwart IDG properties like ComputerWorld and Network World follow a similar course?

What do you think? Where do you get your information? Is the move online and through events consistent with your desires or will this be another “I miss the good old days” decision.

Let me know.

Something’s cooking…

SLED Cube

Novell just wrapped up its latest edition of Brainshare in Salt Lake and as the dust settles and I catch up on other industry news it seems momentum for Linux desktops keeps getting stronger and stronger.

Any why not.  At a tenth of the price of recently released alternatives, there’s never been a better time to check out this affordable innovation.  My colleagues Nat Friedman and Guy Lunardi showed the 5,000 folks in attendance at Brainshare what we’ve been up to since the release last July of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10…seems it wasn’t just the crowd that was impressed.

The good folks at CRNtech just published their latest findings on their Linux desktop bakeoff.  In their study they took a look at offerings from the four leading Linux enterprise desktop alternatives: Linspire Five-O, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, the newly released Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop 5.0 and Xandros 4 Professional.

I guess it wouldn’t surprise you that Novell came out on top (again) with CRNtech summarizing by saying, “While all four Linux vendors offer attractive suites, Novell leads the pack by paying close attention to enterprise features that allow users to work with .Net and Visual Basic macros….”   This is all good news for Linux and the Open Source community at large as it demonstrates the power of innovation throughout the operating system value chain from “the desktop to the data center”.

There was also an interesting piece by John Longwell on Linux advocates and the customer perspective that’s worth a read.

Finally, all work and no play make for a dull day and for your enterainment we released three Mac / PC / Linux ads at Brainshare that are getting terrific play at YouTube and elsewhere.  You can key “Novell MAC PC” on YouTube or go directly to our website to check out these and other videos we released at Brainshare.

Enjoy.

John
