Google Chrome OS – Welcome to the Party

Announced yesterday to much fanfare, Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will, according to the company, initially be targeted at netbooks. The software architecture is very simple: a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel.  You have a bit of a wait though as according to Google, the Chrome OS won’t be available for at least a year.

We are encouraged and applaud Google’s commitment to promote and use Linux and open source technologies in their planned operating system announcement  for consumers.   As others have noted, we believe this further validates that Linux is not only enterprise ready, but consumer ready as well.

Fortunately, customers will not need to wait to take advantage of the security, flexibility and cost advantages of using Linux on personal computers: Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop has been delivering these benefits for years.  Longstanding customers like the French car company PSA Peugeot, which has over 20,000 desktops running SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, have had great success and realized substantial cost savings running Linux.

The Google announcement may sound familiar in another way. If imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, then Google Chrome OS is a tremendous validation of Moblin, the Intel-led, Linux-based operating system designed specifically for next generation netbooks. Moblin is already seeing support from major netbook manufacturers, and Moblin is available now.

While Google’s gravitas generates plenty of conversation and their planned entry into the consumer operating system environment is indeed news, we welcome the addition of another technology industry leader joining the cause for promoting Linux as the operating system of choice.

Really spending a lot of time on the blogs again, eh?

Just another example of Novell having a Chief Marketing Officer with no clue on how to actually Market.

    Some things just never change.

    Lisa,

I’m really fine if you dislike me. I won’t defend nor explain my work ethic or priorities. If you have something constructive that you’d like me or Novell to consider, I am very open to your ideas. We certainly don’t have it all perfect or right. If you’d like to assault me instead, I fear we have no common ground for a constructive conversation. I await your response.

  5. Jane Says:

It really depends on what innovative features Google brings to the market. Google Gears allows for offline use of all of their apps which includes calendar, docs, gmail. So in theory you could use this Chrome Web OS offline but that won’t matter if the web apps don’t have some API access or something to talk to the machines directly.

  6. Lisa Says:

    John,

I’ve posted twice in response to your last message and before Jane’s was allowed to be published here.

There was no personal attack whatsoever involved, yet Novell has refused to publish them.

Just a bit of censorship, isn’t there?

  7. Linc Says:

Do Novell have any plan to expand China Market?

  8. John Dragoon Says:

Linc…thank you for your question. Novell already has a large presence in China which includes a complete sales and technical team as well as a dedicated research and development engineering group. We have been particularly successful with our Linux offerings but sell our systems and identity management as well. Is there a specific market you feel we are missing? Thanks. John

  9. Linc Says:

    John, thanks for your reply.
ZENworks is a good tool for IT management.
But as I know, in my friend of IT area, most of them don’t know such a good tool.
What we are talking about Novell, they always keep their old mind about Netware.Actually, today Novell has more and more other good products.
I am not sure how successful you see in your site.
But I think Novell should stand out more time in public area, like give a exhibition in most big city, show and share the novell new technology.
