Is Big Brother watching?
The CEO of Boeing had a bad email day. He used the corporate email system to send a series of detailed and explicit emails to a woman with whom he was having an affair. He got caught and resigned/was fired. This happened earlier this year and highlights a growing trend in the corporate world. Email surveillance and monitoring.
This week my BUZZ column has to do with this growing trend and how it influences GroupWise. GroupWise 6.5 added a new API called the Trusted Application API. This API allows 3rd party vendors to develop tools for GroupWise administrators to monitor email within the GroupWise system.
I want to know from you, is this a good thing or a bad thing? I have spoken with many people on this topic and there is a wide range of answers to the this question.
One CEO of a small advertising firm said, "I don't want to know what my employees are saying because I would probably have to fire someone who I really want to keep."
Yet an IT Healthcare administrator mentioned to me that there has arisen the need to monitor email internal to their company due to harassment issues.
If you have an opinion about whether it is a good idea to monitor and read your employees email, I would like to hear from you.
Visit www.blisscorp.com/gwblog/index.html and let me know what your opinion might be.
