Welcome to BrainStorm Cool Tips. New tips will be posted regularly to help you more effectively use Novell Linux Desktop. If you have any suggestions for tips, please feel free to let us know by emailing tips@brainstorminc.com
Changing File Associations
By default, when you double-click to open a graphical file on the Gnome Novell Linux Desktop, the file opens with Eye of Gnome. This can be frustrating when you created the graphic in the GIMP and would rather open the file and edit it with the application that created it. You can either try to always remember to open graphical files using the Open With option, or you can change the default file association by following the steps below:
- Right-click a graphical file of the type you wish to open with the GIMP by default.
- From the context menu that appears, select Open With -> Other Application.
- Select the GIMP from the list of applications associated with graphical files.
- Click the Modify... button.
- Choose Use as default for "PNG image" items, OR if you only want to open this specific file with the GIMP by default, choose Use as default for "filename" only.
- Click OK.
- Click OK again.
When an Application Isn't Listed
When the application with which you wish to open the file isn't on the list, you can add it to the list of possible options by following the steps below:
- Right-click a graphical file of the type you wish to open with an unlisted program.
- From the context menu that appears, select Open With -> Other Application.
- Click the Go There button.
- In the Default Action field of the Actions area of the Edit File Type dialog that appears, select Custom.
- Click the Browse button to choose an application from your file system to associate with the file.
- Make sure this file shows in the Program to Run field.
- Click OK.
Because there are several types of graphical files, you may need to change the default more than once. Go ahead an experiment with changing other file associations, as well.
